Lüneburg–Scharnebeck Ship Lift

The construction of the world's largest double-vertical boat lift Lüneburg Scharnebeck was built in 1974 and offers a worth seeing technical spectacle. The ship lift offers modern cargo ships the opportunity to overcome a height of 38 meters. The lift's design lasted for decades.

In order to create a connection between the Elbe (Artlenburg) and Mittellandkanal (Wolfsburg), engineers built the Elbe side canal in eight years of construction. On the entire stretch of the Elbe side channel a height difference of 61 meters is overcome. Of these, the Uelzen lock bridges 23 meters and the remaining 38 meters the Scharnebeck ship lift.
