Earth is the only planet in the solar system that harbors life. The rapid rotation of the Earth and its liquid nickel-iron core create a global magnetic field that, along with the atmosphere, protects us from all the dangerous radiation that originates from the Sun or other stars. Earth's atmosphere also protects us from meteors, most of which burn up before they can hit the surface.

From space travel, we have learned a great deal about our home planet. The first American satellite, Explorer 1, discovered a zone of intense radiation that we now call the Van Allen belts. This layer consists of fast-moving charged particles trapped by Earth's magnetic field in a doughnut-shaped region around the equator. Other findings from satellite observations show that our planet's magnetic field is deformed into a teardrop shape by the solar wind. We also now know that the thin upper atmosphere, once thought to be still and uneventful, is teeming with activity -- swelling during the day and decreasing significantly at night. Depending on changes in solar activity, the upper atmosphere contributes to the formation of weather and climate on Earth.

The path to discovery is attributed to Sir Percival Lowell, who founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and funded three separate searches for "Planet X". Lowell made numerous unsuccessful calculations to track him down, believing that he would have to find his effects on Neptune's trajectory. Dr. Vesto Slipher, the director of the observatory, hired Clyde Tombaugh for this third search, and Clyde examined sequences of photos of the solar system (the ecliptic) that lay one to two weeks apart, searching for anything in the background the stars moved. This systematic approach was successful, and so Pluto was discovered by this young (born February 4, 1906) 24-year-old laboratory assistant from Kansas. In fact, Pluto is too small to be "Planet X" that Percival Lowell had hoped to find. The discovery of Pluto was a pure coincidence.
