The Kaltenhofer Moor has 2 parts: the forest and the moor. Be sure to track in the moor, you can easily get lost here 😢

The moor is no longer an insider tip. Hiking tours also go through here at the WE.

Kaltenhofer Moor Lake

Highlight • Lake

Tip: Even though the green is gone, the moor lake is full of colors. Maybe you'll be lucky enough that the moor lake is frozen over and snow covers the landscape. This will provide some very attractive views.

The 'Stodthagen Natural Forest and Adjacent Raised Moors' nature reserve was established in 1942 and protects the remains of a raised bog, much of which has been drained or converted into grassland. The dams you walk on are traces of this former use.
In the east of the nature reserve is a moor lake of almost 1 hectare, created by peat extraction.
To prevent further drainage of the bog, individual ditches were sealed, creating numerous pools in the forest, which you can see directly on the Komoot map.
Of the vegetation typical of raised bogs, heather and cotton grass are particularly enchanting.
The nature reserve is closely connected to the Stodthagen Forest to the south. The bog drains via ditches to the Mühlenau, which flows into the Fuhlensee near Schilksee, which you may recognize from ice skating in winter.

In the Stodthagen natural forest, the trees are allowed to grow old again and die naturally.
Dead wood is an essential part of the natural cycle of life. It is the habitat of many animal and fungal species as well as mosses and lichens. Numerous species of beetles are also involved in the complete decomposition of a dead log.

March 29, 2024,Hunde-Runde: Kaltenhofer Moor im Vorfrühling - mit Moor-See ⛅🌿🍄🌳🐕🚶‍♀️
Leaving the house early on a holiday and having a beautiful piece of nature almost to yourself - there's no better way to start the long weekend. We only met a woman with a dog. Otherwise lots of wildlife. We saw two large groups of deer. Woodpeckers, cranes and many more birds that I couldn't identify. 😋 The Wuschel cattle …

Four dogs and five people. Always a challenge. 🤪 But we did it again. 🐶💪 There are hardly any opportunities to take photos. Because we have our hands full keeping the little rascals under control. 😅🤷
