What to expect on Felton – Bear Creek Road loop from Bear Mountain
This loop starts with some rolling hills before the real work begins. You'll soon find yourself tackling sustained ascents on Bear Creek Road, with grades often hitting 5-10% and even steeper sections. The latter two-thirds of the climb, especially as you enter areas like the Sequoia National Forest, are truly memorable, offering awe-inspiring views of thick woods and giant sequoia redwood trees. Expect a significant physical challenge, but the shade from the trees on the lower slopes provides some respite. This route is definitely for cyclists with very good fitness who appreciate a tough climb rewarded by stunning natural beauty.
Planning your visit
Be prepared for varied road conditions; some parts of Bear Creek Road, particularly beyond the initial miles, can have ruts, potholes, and loose gravel, making descents rough. While traffic can be mild on certain sections, narrow curves and potential logging truck traffic mean you should exercise caution and consider using a flashing tail light for increased visibility. Some sections, like Bear Creek Road from Lexington Reservoir, are not recommended due to narrow, winding roads and fast-moving traffic. Parking is generally available near the start point in the Felton area.
