View of the Totengrund

Highlight • Viewpoint

What a view! With Totengrund, one of the most beautiful and famous heath valleys now lies before you. It's no wonder, then, that the first heathlands were acquired here for nature conservation, to preserve them for future generations.

Wide tires and good suspension are truly advantageous here. The magnificent route around Totengrund, in particular, is impossible for the average cyclist to manage in some places with regular bikes without assistance. You simply have to push and enjoy the magnificent views.

As early as 1906, the heath pastor Bode managed to find a patron who saved this heath valley for posterity. Professor Thomsen from Münster bought the land, which was about to be reforested and was to be built on the slopes with holiday homes.
Did you know? There is disagreement about the origin of the name "Totengrund"...

Given the stunning view over the valley, one can speculate whether the name "Totengrund" comes from the fact that the Wilseder farmers once carried their dead through the valley to the cemetery in Bispingen, or whether the name simply stems from the fact that the soil was so poor and dry that it was economically unproductive.

Even at 0°C, with the wrong clothes (jeans and winter jacket) and a rental gherkin from the Center Parcs Bispinger Heide, an absolutely worthwhile goal!

From Wilsede two paths lead southwards to the ground of the dead. Once there, you have a great view over the heath and far beyond - absolutely recommendable! Interesting for mountain bikers: From the vantage point, several trails lead down: the Totentrail, the Holzbergtrail and Steingrundtrail. Have fun!

Wilsede Village

Highlight • Settlement

The picturesque heath village of Wilsede is closed to motor vehicles and can only be reached on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. There are several old farms here and you can learn a lot about life in the Lüneburg Heath in the “Dat Ole Hus” museum. There are several inns where you can eat and drink.

Wilsede Village

Highlight • Settlement

Only come with wide tires - racing bikes will sink in the sand here. The cobblestone tracks in the few places on the edge where cars are allowed are also not for untrained bottoms. The views over the heathland and the scent of heather and heather sheep are unique.

Wilsede

Highlight • Settlement

The Heidedorf Wilsede (Low German / platdüütsch Wils) is a district of Bispingen im Heidekreis in the Lüneburg Heath, Lower Saxony. It is located in the middle of the nature reserve Lüneburg Heath. Although Wilsede is not a museum village in the strict sense, all the features of a pre-industrial heath village are still present here, which have been lost in other parts of the country.

Panorama Trail on the Lüneburg Heath

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Well, a good bike path looks different. Lots of cobblestones.

Better to take the sandy path. The pavement isn't bad.
