Whiteside

Highlight • Natural Monument

Whiteside is a 2,359-foot (707 m) Wainwright in the Lake District National Park. It is connected to Hopegill Head via an airy ridge which is not technical to hike but is very dramatic and can be challenging in strong winds. A nice circuit is to walk Whiteside, Hopegill Head and Grasmoor together from the road beside Crummock Water.

Sand Hill Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sand Hill is often walked over without a second thought en route to Hopegill Head but it offers an excellent view of the ridge towards Whiteside in it's own right.

Grasmoor

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beefy and cumbersome, Grasmoor is the highest peak of Lakeland’s North Western Fells: a colossus overlooking Crummock Water and the Buttermere valley. Protected to the north and west by vertiginous, broken crags, Grasmoor is gentle and rounded from other aspects, as is its grassy summit-plateau – an ideal place to ogle the distant Scafells.

Great view down the narrowing ridge from Wandope towards Whiteless Pike with Buttermere and the Red Pike, High stile, High Crag ridge beyond. Whiteless Pike feels very offset from the rest of the Grasmoor hills.

Whiteless Pike

Highlight • Summit

Whiteless Pike is a 2,170-foot (660 m) Wainwright fell. It's most often hiked from Buttermere up a steep and sometimes scramble-y ascent. The best views of Rannerdale Knotts can be gained from the slopes of Whiteless Pike. The ridge to Wandope is really stunning but not technically difficult to hike.

Whiteless Pike Ascent

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

Doing this ascent at sunset was pure joy! I highly recommend you experience a mountain sunset at some point in your life and Whiteless Pike overlooking Rannerdale Knotts with the sun setting over Crummock Water is bliss.

Rannerdale Knotts is a 1,165-foot (355 m) Wainwright fell in the Lake District close to the eastern edge of Crummock Water. My favourite time to hike Rannerdale Knotts is in the Spring when the bluebells are out, but at any time of year the view to Crummock Water and Buttermere from here is outstanding. This is definitely one of my favourite parts of the Lake District.
