Highlight • Historical Site

Typical street of Vrsar with beautiful old and colorful houses. Towards the center there is a place from which you can even see the church 'Eufemia' in Rovinj.

Church of St. Martin, Vrsar

Highlight • Religious Site

Beautiful church.

The construction of the church began in 1804 (laying of the foundation stone) and continued in the years 1805-1813. Construction work was only resumed between 1927 and 1935 and the church was ceremoniously inaugurated on March 19, 1935.
The central nave and side aisles of the church are separated from each other by four columns on which the names of the donors are noted.
In the chancel there are two arches with religious paintings. The paintings were made in 1946 by Antonio Macchi (painter from Rovinj).
The life of St. Foška (martyrdom) and St. Martin (parting of the cloak) is depicted on the first arch, and in the middle there is an image of Christ with outstretched arms. At the edge of the arch a Latin remainder: SANCTI NOSTRI MARTINE ET FUSCA INTERCEDITE PRO NOBIS (our holy protectors Martin and Foška, pray for us.)
The second arch is decorated with flowers and trees as well as angels and lambs. The symbol of Christ (Agnus Dei - Lamb of God) is depicted in the middle. The inscription on the edge of the arch reads: ACE AGNUS DEI: ECCE QUI TOLLIT PECCATA MUNDI (This is the Lamb of God who takes upon himself the sins of the world).
Otherwise the church is sparsely furnished. The marble baptismal font comes from the old church of St. Martin (14th century). It stood at the "Old Square", which today bears the name "Trg Degrassi".

After World War II, this destroyed church and its bell tower were demolished.

The new bell tower is 40 m high and was only built in 1989-1991.

Church of St. Fosca

Highlight • Religious Site

On the church tower, until it was confiscated for war purposes in the First and Second World War, there were two bells (one from the 17th and one from the 18th century), both from the bell foundries of Venice. Instead of the bell that had been removed, a new bell was hung, cast in the Lapagna bell foundry in Trieste in 1922. This bell was also made in Latin along with an old, richly decorated bell (images of St. Foška, Madona, crucifix) from the 17th century Inscription: St. Foška from the town of Vrsar 1680, removed by the Italians in World War II, but the bells were not used for war purposes, are now in the tower of the Church of St. Martin. In the restored church there is now a rich collection of sacred objects, including images of the torture of St. Foška from the 17th century. Some tombstones with Latin inscriptions attract the attention of visitors. In front of the main altar is the grave of the priest Luka Prodanić from Vrsar (Luca Prodanich) who died in 1659. Symbols of the priesthood (chalice and host) are carved on the grebstone.
