Schauinsland Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

Over 85 steps you reach the 22 meter high viewing platform of the Schauinsland Tower, actually called "Eugen-Keidel Tower". In good weather you can look into the Vosges and the Swiss Alps. The tower is always open.

Viewpoint Kappler Wand

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the precipice of the Kappler Wand, you have a beautiful view towards Freiburg. It's also not far to the Schauinsland Tower, but it's quieter...

A circular path lined with interesting wooden sculptures stretches high above the treetops at the summit of the Schauinsland. In the direction of the Rappenecker Hütte you come to this sculpture trail.

Right at the beginning the impressive sculpture "360 degrees dream time" is enthroned. The artist and sculptor Thomas Rees from Kappel has transformed the trunk of a mighty silver fir into a mystical figure. The silver fir stood in the Freiburg city forest for over 100 years, the dry summer of 2003 hit it so hard that it dried up and had to be felled three years later. Rees has carved an impressive face into the hollow lower part of the trunk. You can sit protected like in a wing chair and dream. Not only the magnificent view from up here, but also the individual works of art, including the high wind drill, also designed by Thomas Rees, invite you to linger on the signposted path again and again. "The interplay of place, history and material determines the shape of my works, which invite you to feel, look, walk through and experience," says Rees, whose sculptures are often created intuitively and spontaneously. The 1,284 meter high Schauinsland is a popular destination in the Black Forest. About 15 kilometers from Feiburg, it can be reached quickly by car or the Schauinsland cable car, which overcomes around 750 meters in altitude. It takes about an hour for the well-developed circular route to the summit.

English Memorial on Schauinsland

Highlight • Monument

The evening ringing of the Hofsgrund church and the courageous commitment of the entire Hofsgrund population saved the lives of the majority of a group of 27 students from the Strand School in London-Brixton who were in distress at the Schauinsland on the evening of April 17, 1936. Any help came too late for 5 students between the ages of 12 and 14. Four of them could not be resuscitated by the Hofsgrund rescuers in the inn "Hof". The fifth student died just 10 minutes after the ambulance arrived at the Freiburg University Hospital early in the morning of the next day. Another was kept alive in the clinic. It was only in retrospect that the full extent of the accident on April 17, 1936 could be overlooked: a group of 28 people - 27 students between the ages of 12 and 17 and their teacher - had got into mountain difficulties and if the rescuers from Hofsgrund hadn't been there , even more people would have died. Completely disoriented, the teacher and the group finally climbed up the Kappler Wand cross-country in fog and heavy snowfall to seek shelter somewhere. But five young people had died that evening on Freiburg's local mountain due to exhaustion and circulatory failure.

September 23, 2021,Freiburg: Schauinsland-Gipfelrunde
The day before I walked from Bohrer over the Kybfelsen to the Schauinsland. One day later (in the best weather) the summit tour and the view of the Swiss mountains will be made up for - this time the journey is made by cable car. Very nice view, but unfortunately it is very crowded upstairs, even if it is during …

I was a bit jealous when I saw some mountain bikers preparing for the "Badish Moon Rising Trail". My bike is still in individual parts in the workshop in Halle, after all, almost all new …

A short panoramic hike on the Schauinsland mountain in the Black Forest, Freiburg's local mountain at 1,284 m.
Since we were up early in the morning, we drove from Freiburg up the wonderfully developed and winding pass road to the (free) parking lot at the Schauinsland cable car's mountain station, although parking is limited here.
From Horben, you can also …

Very nice summit trail with about 3/4 shade 1/4 sun. Very great views from the top. Unfortunately, the lookout tower was closed that day, otherwise you could have looked even further into the country. At the end of the tour you will pass the mining museum of a silver mine, which you can also visit. Nice little tour with some …

Went to the Schauinsland in the sunshine. The wind was blowing hard and it was pretty cool. Gloves were appropriate.
Later it got really stormy...very stormy.
That's why we were probably alone there.
I don't think you have to describe the tour any further...most of those who come by here do this short version.
Just for information...the tower is closed …

It's finally here, our long weekend at the Wutach Gorge has begun.
In order to loosen up the journey a bit, we made a small tour on the Schauinsland.
After a short look at the Schauisland Bahn we walked to the tower and enjoyed the view from above.
We continued past the Sun Observatory to the Englishman Monument, where English …
