Tälligrat Tunnel

The tunnel was originally intended to drain the water from Lake Märjelen into the valley in a controlled manner. Originally, the water line was on the lake side at the tunnel mouth and the glacier had dammed up the lake to such an extent. In the spring, when the snow melted, this dam became leaky and Lake Märjelen erupted through the glacier, causing great damage below the glacier. The tunnel was intended to drain some of the water in time to limit the damage. Today, thanks to the melting glacier, no more water is dammed up and the tunnel serves as a footpath.
