It connected the harbor with warehouses, workshops, inns, and the homes of boatmen, merchants, fishermen, and vintners, thus forming the economic heart of Meersburg, while administration, nobility, and the church were located in the higher-lying upper town. Despite later alterations following town fires, the historical layout has been preserved, so that the Unterstadtstraße is considered an authentic testament to a medieval harbor and trade route on Lake Constance.
