Royal Bavarian War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The Hall of Antiquities is a classical secular building in Speyer, it was later rededicated as a memorial to the 2nd Royal Bavarian Engineer Battalion.
After the First World War, the antique hall stood empty and no longer served any practical purpose. In 1930, the artistically significant building was rededicated as a memorial to the 2nd Royal Bavarian Engineer Battalion, which was formerly based in Speyer.[5] A memorial stone to this effect was set up in the hall and an inscription of the same kind was placed on the outside. The outside inscription reads: “TO THE DEAD OF K. BAY. 2nd PIONEER BATL. FOR MEMORY”, the inner one, on the memorial stone: “IT FELL FOR THE FATHERLAND 48 OFFZ. 1742 NCO. AND PIONEERS, 1914 – 1918”. Metal sculptures of a pioneer emblem (anchor, spade and pickaxe) and a German steel helmet model 1916 were also attached to the memorial stone. Inside, in the side rooms, stone tablets were placed with the names of the fallen. The official inauguration of the monument took place on the occasion of the XXI. Bavarian Pioneers Bundestag in 1934, for which a commemorative badge with a picture of the antique hall was issued. After the Second World War, the memorial stone received the additional inscription "OUR FALLEN AND THE VICTIMS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, 1939 - 1945".

Speyer Cathedral (German: Speyerer Dom)

Highlight • Religious Site

Under no circumstances should you pass through Speyer without taking a look at the cathedral! It is the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1981. In addition to the actual visit to the cathedral, a visit to the crypt is always recommended. Also worth seeing: the cathedral bowl outside the church. This is often filled with wine for celebrations.

St. James Pilgrim statue, Speyer

Highlight • Monument

For centuries, the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela has been one of the most important pilgrimage routes in Europe! More than 10 years ago, the historic Way of St. James was signposted in the Palatinate. The path from Speyer to the Hornbach Monastery is one of the main arteries of the numerous Jakobswege in Germany.
