The McAuliffe Monument in Bastogne was erected in memory of General McAuliffe. He started out as an American soldier but he soon rose to the rank of commander. The monument is a bust placed next to an American tank on the outskirts of Bastogne. He was actively involved in the Normandy landings, but it was during the Battle of the Bulge that he really gained name and fame. He was commander of the 101st regiment and was located in the city of Bastogne. The city was completely surrounded by the German army and when asked by the Germans if he would surrender, he said the legendary word “Nuts!” . For his service in Bastogne, McAuliffe was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest award in the United States Army. To honor this great soldier, Bastogne's market square was renamed Place McAuliffe.
