To the Old Skipper's House, Lauenburg

Highlight • Restaurant

The traditional half-timbered house from 1663 is located in a picturesque corner of the "lower town" of Lauenburg, directly on the Elbe. With its guest house and the "Fährleutehaus" (Anno 1649), the "Altes Schifferhaus" offers 24 comfortable rooms with a total of 46 beds.

The kitchen of the "Altes Schifferhaus" spoils you with down-to-earth and varied specialties from the region, the waterfront and the inland of Schleswig-Holstein.

Historic old town of Lauenburg on the Elbe

Highlight • Historical Site

A stroll through the beautiful old town with its pretty half-timbered houses is well worth it. It feels like stepping back in time. Some houses have information boards about their history.

Lauenburg Old Town

Highlight • Historical Site

The lower town of the old shipping town of Lauenburg is worth a trip. The lower town is at risk from every powerful Elbe flood. The water levels are marked at one point. The last floods were a disaster for every owner. People who had recently renovated had to start all over again.
The lower town is home to many artisans and many restaurants. There is a lot to discover.

It's also worth taking a long walk along the Elbe to the former match factory (now a youth hostel), the winter pictures come from there (05.02.2012). The way back takes you through the old town or vice versa. If you dare, go from the lower town up to the castle. You will be rewarded with a wonderful view at the top.

Lauenburg is the home port of the steam-powered paddle steamer Kaiser-Wilhelm.

The best view of Lauenburg is from Hohnstorf.

A magnificent hiking trail that leads directly down along the banks of the Elbe and offers our four-legged friends many opportunities to cool off their paws. In several places the path is blocked by fallen trees, some of which have been there for a long time and have also been sawn up. But you can easily climb over them or just walk past them. That spices up the route. Anyway, we had a lot of fun

A great hiking trail leads right along the banks of the High Elbe. Due to the trees on the slope, the view is somewhat limited, but still beautiful.

The “Hohes Elbufer” recreation area is listed in the official list of all nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein under number 142. It is located on the Elbe between the towns of Geesthacht-Tesperhude and Lauenburg and is 469 hectares in size.

The landscape is shaped by the Ice Age. The Hohe Geest was created by glaciation during the Saale Glacial Period between 300,000 and 130,000 years ago. The sand ridge, which is over 80 meters high in places, drops steeply down to the Elbe glacial valley.

The charm of this landscape is revealed by the interplay of water and land on the one hand and the differences in altitude on the other. From the Geest ridge, visitors can enjoy impressive views of the Elbe and the marsh in many places.

At the foot of the Elbe slope, you can enjoy the varied riverbank vegetation with diverse views of the river and its backwaters on natural paths. On the Lower Saxony side of the Elbe, dykes dominate the landscape.

Large parts of the Geest ridge and the slope are wooded. Many cycling and hiking trails open up the area. The vegetation is particularly characterized by the southern exposure of the Elbe slope. Connoisseurs will find some rare plants here. The beaver has recently returned and is leaving its traces. Since 1997, the "Hohes Elbufer" nature reserve has been part of the UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve.
