Sanctuary of the Crucifix in San Felice

Highlight • Religious Site

The building is believed to originate from the 9th-10th century. In the wall of the current façade, traces of three cross windows, typical of Romanesque architecture, were seen in the 19th century. The current apse, with a cross vaulted ceiling and monogram of San Bernardino da Siena, is the work of a renovation carried out in the fifteenth century; the ceiling of the church is instead a simple truss.
Tradition has it that San Felice (like Campiano) was a stopover for Pope Lucius III on his journey to the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro in Badia Calavena; it seems that the pope had granted a special privilege, that is to be able to gain all the indulgences of the Roman Church for every Friday of the year.

The sanctuary (officially the rectory of the diocese of Verona) is open every day and is located on the pass between Val Tramigna and Val d'Illasi, a few meters from the provincial road 37/a "dei ciliegi"; precisely its position makes it frequented by people from both valleys especially during the Fridays of Lent with the Via Crucis.

Old Wool Road

Highlight • Trail

An ancient path that winds along the ridge of the Lessini mountains, used for centuries, since ancient times, for transhumance, today transformed into a new tourist route, which climbs from Soave and reaches San Bortolo, in Selva di Progno. The itinerary crosses the municipalities of Soave, Cazzano, Illasi, Tregnago, Badia Calavena and Selva di Progno. The paved path has an average width of three meters. It is an itinerary surrounded by greenery, which starts from the classic Soave area, therefore from hills with intensive cultivation declined to the vine, to then reach and cross olive groves, the cherry trees of the Tramigna valley and the woods of the upper Lessinia. The entire Via della Lana, which alternates sections paved in concrete with white paths, is equipped with signs to give the correct information to visitors.
This ancient road, which climbs between deciduous woods and numerous small streams with pouring and clear waters, was for centuries the only road that connected the people of the town and the districts of San Bortolo with the valley. From there transhumances passed both towards the mountains for the summer pastures, and back for winter grazing in the plains.
A valley rich in water, thanks to the numerous small streams that descend from the side of San Bortolo and the streams that come out here and there in the woods.

Church of San Colombano

Highlight • Religious Site

Since 1400 ", writes a parish priest of 1700," a chapel or oratory has been erected beyond the mountains under the title of San Colombano, of reason and dominion of the community of Illasi, with a miraculous image of Maria Santissima (.. .). There is a rumor that it had a cemetery around it on the occasion of contagions suffered, to bury corpses, where there was a long and hooked fero to attract them to the burial ".

The church of San Colombano has always been at the center of the attention of popular piety, which on many occasions has resorted to the miraculous image mentioned above: a fresco (probably made on the occasion of the extension works of the church organized by the Pompeii family in 1600 ) placed, since 1823, above the main altar. Epidemics and famines experienced by the people of Illasi have had, over the centuries, the Madonna di San Colombano as a point of reference and reason for hope.

Of the many votive processions, today still survives after 150 years, that of the second Sunday of May, which commemorates the grace granted by the Virgin on the occasion of the "cholera morbus" of 1835.

Other frescoes, dating back to 1400, can be seen on the internal and external walls of the church. The two figures of saints on either side of the presbytery were recently discovered and restored, by the will of Don Alessandro Bennati.

The Municipality of Illasi proved to be the owner of the small temple around the middle of 1500; previously it seems to have belonged to the Pompei family. Over the centuries, numerous religious succeeded one another in the custody of the church.

The church was restored in 1970, with the contribution of the parishioners of Illasi.

San Marco Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

It was built in 1958 by the illustrious professor Alberto Trabucchi for his devotion to San Marco.
The style takes up and reinterprets the pure structure of the medieval-Romanesque churches scattered along our valley. The façade, enriched in the upper part by a circular window called "eye", is a hut, preceded by a portico with three round arches. The roof, with overhanging eaves, has two pitches, covered with Venetian tiles.
The interior space evokes in its sobriety the meditative and prayer spirit typical of these "small" temples. The bell tower has a quadrangular plan and in the belfry there are nine bells, famous for the concerts held every year for the trophy in memory of Professor Alberto Trabucchi. Its verticality fits naturally with the severity of the surrounding cypresses. Even this sacred place, although recently built, embodies the typical architecture of the place in its volumes. The chromatic and landscape harmony of the materials make the church of San Marco pleasing to the eye, in symbiosis and synergy with the surrounding environment.
