It's also really beautiful in winter when it's snowed. You have to be careful because you're stepping over a stream bed here and there, but it was all very doable in hiking boots.

April 6, 2025,Moorweg Rothenthurm
Once again on foot, I explored Switzerland's largest raised bog in Rothenthurm.

Knowing little about bogs, the colors appear magnificent. The golden autumn colors of the reeds are particularly striking.

I passed an information board, however, which pointed out how this bog is suffering. It is far too dry. Signs point to reeds, which are blooming everywhere, pleasing to the …

An excursion on September 13th, 2022

Today we are hiking with Ulrich Steinmann in the largest contiguous raised bog area in Switzerland.

We start our tour at Biberbrugg train station and walk to Rothenthurm. The raised bog hiking trail starts right at the train station. The hiking trail is very varied, in places it goes through a forest, but mostly …

A beautiful walk through the forest and mostly through moorland. From Biberbrugg to Rothenthurm. Despite the clouds, wet path, I really liked it, after all it didn't rain. Unique, especially beautiful if you don't hike through moorland that much. 👍☀️🍄

Today I was allowed to go on a really nice hike with the Wander Brothers in the Rothenthurm high moor.
Many thanks to you for the very nice time.

The path is well traveled today (it is marked as hiking trail 835), the weather up here is still perfect at over 20 C.
We soon reach the edge of …

I had read about this walk and it seemed well reviewed. I checked some of the local webcams and they were snow-free so with the hopes of spotting spring flowers, we started our walk.

The walk started with the rare sighting of a forklift transporting a bicycle on the highway, bizarre!
February 5, 2025,Biberbrugg - Rothenthurm
By car to Biberbrugg. Then hiked along the Biber, then through the raised moor to Rothenthurm.
Fog: zero
Sun: 100%
Snow/ice: medium
Mud: quite a lot
We had already done the route on 2 wheels (in summer!), so it was interesting to see many places in winter.
Back with the SOB. Conclusion: a very successful day in the fresh air.
