The chapel stands on a substructure about four meters high, measures only 2 x 3 meters, with a roof height of about three and a half meters, with a west-facing apse in which a miraculous image was exhibited. A wooden bridge chapel in Rapperswil was first mentioned in 1485; however, it is most likely that a chapel was already built on this section of the Way of St. James with the construction of the lake bridge in 1360.
