Einsiedeln Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

Most important place on the pilgrimage in Switzerland. An impressive place with a magnificent cathedral and monastery. The evening Vespers service with Ave Maria is a must - the chants and organ music followed by a pilgrimage is a highly spiritual experience - even or especially if you don't think much of spirituality.

Be sure to spend the night in the monastery hostel. The monks' cells are spartan and nevertheless very impressive and appear with an unbelievable calmness. The pilgrim's stamp with the black Madonna is a must and is available at the hostel reception.

St. Meinrad Chapel (Etzel Chapel)

Highlight • Religious Site

The first chapel on the top of the pass was built in the 13th century. It was demolished and rebuilt in the 17th century. After the renovation in 2011, the chapel was re-blessed. The monk Meinrad is said to have lived as a hermit at the top of the pass in the ninth century. Meinrad later moved deeper into the Dark Forest, to what is now Einsiedeln.

Devil's Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Already in the 12th century a first bridge over the Sihl was built here. The present bridge exists since 1794.
Just above the bridge is the birthplace of the great physician and reformer of medieval medicine, Paracelsus
