Kürsingerhütte

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The large Kürsingerhütte has space for 150 guests and is located at 2,558 meters. In summer it is a popular base for climbing the Großvenediger. The view of the glaciers from the hut is fantastic! Curiously, there is even an indoor climbing facility. Please note that there is no network or WiFi in the Obersulzbachtal and at the Kürsingerhütte.

Obersulzbachkees Glacier

Highlight • Natural Monument

With a length of about 4 kilometers and an area of about 11 km², the glacier is the largest glacier in the Venediger Group and the second largest of the Hohe Tauern after Pasterze. It consists of four large, north-facing firn hollows that extend from the north side of the Großvenediger to the further west part below the Maurerkeeskopf. As a result of the decline in glaciers, these four parts, which previously united below the Kürsingerhütte, now represent four separate glacier areas.
The Obersulzbachkees became famous through Ignaz von Kürsinger, who in his reports of the first ascent of the Großvenediger in 1841 called the ice quarry below the Kürsinger Hütte still known as "Turkish tent city". At this point there is a glacial lake.
The Obersulzbachkees is one of the first glaciers in the Eastern Alps to be mapped. In 1883, Eduard Richter published a map on a scale of 1: 5000 - the first exact glacier map of an Eastern Alpine glacier. Richter attempted to compare the glacier levels of 1880 and 1882.

The new aluminum ladder was flown by helicopter from the Kürsinger Hütte to the Obersulzbachkees glacier on the evening of July 8th, 2022 and installed. About 40 degrees incline, very well secured and therefore easy to walk on (with crampons).
Many thanks to the builders! Otherwise, the crevasse could only be overcome with two pickaxes and a little ice climbing.

Großvenediger Summit

Highlight • Summit

The Großvenediger is a heavily glaciated main summit in the Hohe Tauern and with 3657m one of the highest mountains in Austria. The world-famous Majästätt, as the Großvenediger is often called, can be climbed via several routes from Salzburg or Osttirol. Technically, the tours are less difficult, but all routes lead over heavily glaciated terrain, which is not to be underestimated due to the risk of splits.
