Sainte-Mère-l'Église

Highlight • Religious Site

The original church dating from the 11th to 13th centuries was largely destroyed during WWII when it was bombed to repel German snipers who had entrenched themselves in the steeple. The modern stained glass window of the portal represents the air landing of American troops. The mannequin hanging from the end of his parachute hanging from the church spire recalls the tragic adventure of Private Steele, who was dropped on the night of June 6. For two hours, he pretended to be dead, while the alarm bells kept ringing below him.

Sainte-Mère-Église Church

Highlight • Religious Site

During the night of June 5, 1944. A fire raged in this village. Everyone helps put out the fire. The light of the fire was then interpreted by an American plane pilot as being a sign that these passengers had been released. American paratroopers land by mistake in the town.

One of the paratroopers is carried by his parachute onto the church tower where he remains hanging for hours, while the fighting rages below him. This is one of the most incongruous stories of the landing of June 6, 1944. You discover this in this town that has become legendary for history buffs.

Km 00 Liberty Road

Highlight • Monument

The Freedom Route is a historic route which commemorates the Liberation of France but also that of Belgium and Luxembourg during the Second World War. The km 0 and 00 terminals of this Route are located in the Manche at Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Utah Beach.
The Way of Freedom was created on the initiative of Commander Guy de la Vasselais. Head of the French military tactical liaison mission near General Patton's 3rd American Army, Guy de la Vasselais received numerous medals at the Liberation. It was in 1946 that he decided to create a Freedom Route in tribute to the sacrifices of the men of the 3rd Army who came to liberate Europe.
The Road to Freedom follows the route taken by the Allies and the French army to liberate France and part of the Benelux.

Terminal :
In 1944 the USA had 48 states, the terminal will therefore have 48 stars to illustrate these states. The 4 colored rectangles represent the 4 portions of the Way of Freedom, namely:
- Sainte-Mère-Eglise/Cherbourg;
- Sainte-Mère-Eglise/Avranches;
- Avranches/Metz;
- Metz/Luxembourg/Bastogne.
Then, always faithful to American symbols, the central flame, representing the torch of Liberty emerging from the sea, is modeled on the flame of the Statue of Liberty.

Utah Beach

Highlight • Beach

The tranquility of this beach makes it difficult to imagine the events of June 1944. The armored vehicles and soldiers of that time have made way for oyster beds, birds and walkers.
