Old Meldon Pond (Meldon Pool)

Highlight • Natural

Do not confuse the clean and clear swimming pools in the river with the old quarry pool. The quarry pool is on private land with clearly posted no swimming signs. The water is up to 40m deep and due to the mineral content is opaque, it is a flooded quarry, not a river fed pond or pool.

A few metres away there are pools within the river which used to house the water wheels used to power the quarry pumps. These pools are shallower, but still swimmable.

Meldon Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

Meldon Reservoir is a breathtaking man-made lake at 900 feet (274 m) above sea level in Dartmoor National Park. Sit and watch as the surrounding moorland changes colour with the sun, chat to the fishermen sitting peacefully on its banks or watch as birds circle above the calm waters. Formed by damming the West Okement River, the reservoir is 0.75 miles (1.2 km) long and 984 feet (300 m) wide.

West Mill Tor

Highlight • Summit

If you are hiking to Yes Tor, don't pass by West Mill Tor without a visit. It almost looks like the ruins of a castle and is very recognisable.

The views from up here take you all the way across to Exmoor National Park in the north or south west to Yes Tor. Simply stunning.

Cullever Steps Ford

Highlight • Trail

Fords like this one litter the military roads around this part of Dartmoor. Of course, there are usually bridges nearby if you don't want to get your feet wet, but where's the fun in that?

East Okement River Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This path winds through exquisite woodlands alongside the East Okement River and has a magical feel about it. Walking along this trail, you’ll see a wonderful waterfall, old oak trees and plenty of mossy rocks.

This trail is particularly glorious in late spring and throughout the summer thanks to its vivid greens and multitude of flowers and birds. You can walk it at any time of year, but wear sturdy boots during winter as the trail can get muddy and rough after wet weather.
