Nature Education Center Bastion VIII

Highlight • Natural Monument

Originally Bastion VIII was part of the defensive belt around the city. When that defense lost its usefulness, the area deteriorated into a landfill, but nature fought back. Today, you can discover about twenty different biotopes in this natural environment. You can enter for free as an individual, every working day between 08.00 and 16.00.

The Sas Lock Complex, Dendermonde

Highlight • Monument

Schutsluis and weir lock, so-called "Oude Sas" on the Dender.

In 1667-1669 a lock with four new state water mills was erected on the Dender in the center of the city, to replace the locks and the destroyed mills of the Ooie-Nieuwburcht. The sluice with sludge played a role in the military defense of the city to flood the surrounding meadows. The new construction of the lock consisted of a central navigation channel between two brick lock walls covered with gray sandstone and equipped with pointed icebreakers, founded on a wooden floor and wooden foundation piles. The lock for inland vessels was closed with six wooden lock gates. On the lock walls stood five brick mill buildings, connected by a wooden footbridge, over the lock was a movable wooden footbridge. The mills were demolished in 1852-1853. The lock, modified in 1768 after the canalisation of the Dender between Aalst and Dendermonde, remained in use as a weir until November 15, 1978, when the Dender estuary was relocated. The old lock construction is now being restored. A new bicycle and pedestrian bridge, an iron swing bridge next to the lock is in use.

Lock with brick lock heads and gully walls, founded on piles and covered with natural stone. Two parallel elongated lock heads with pointed tip. Double wooden lock gates that were opened and closed via wooden capstans. The weir lock is operated by means of racks (toothed rods) driven by vertical winches.

During the restoration work on the lock, an old floor of oak beams was discovered at the bottom of the turning basin behind the weir lock, probably dating from the 17th century.

Oude Dender

Highlight • River

By creating a new mouth of the Dender outside the city centre, the old Dender forms an idyllic water feature that connects the green edge of the city with the cultural-historical pearls in the heart of the city.
The banks of the Dender are accessible over the entire length. Hikers can therefore start at any point to take a trip along the old Dender. The part at the Tragel, with its rich fauna and flora, invites you to daydream. Between the Sas and the Groene Dender, the watercourse is flanked by unique statues, bridges and buildings.

Church of Our Lady

Highlight • Religious Site

The deanery of Our Lady's Church is not really located in the heart of the city, not on the Market, but a few hundred metres further on in the Kerkstraat on the Onze Lieve Vrouwkerkplein. This parish church is called a collegiate church because a chapter of canons used to be attached to it.
The church has a wealth of beautiful valuable works of art. This means that outside of church services, the church must remain closed.
However, from Easter to All Saints' Day, a guide is present every Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm.

Walking trail along 2.0 artworks

Highlight • Monument

Along the aisle of the library, seven unique sculptures are carefully positioned on concrete pedestals. These works of art are the result of seven students from the adult Ceramics workshops of the Academy of Fine Arts, who were inspired by the shape of the pedestals, their location and 3 additional elements: use of clay, theme of openness and use of colour.
The sculptures can be viewed until September 2025.
