How it came about ...
There was inversion weather on that day. This caused the slopes of the highest Czech summit, the Schneekoppe, to be completely icy and therefore dangerously smooth. Štefan came from Pece pod Sněžkou and Jan from the Wiesenbaude to ensure the safety of the most difficult section of the way from the Schneekoppe to the (now demolished) Giant hut. Shortly after 11 a.m. Dr. med. M. Landa, the participant of a travel company from Janské Lázně, left Schneekoppe in sunny weather. After a few dozen meters, however, he slipped and slid down the Polish northern slope, where he could hold onto a ledge. Štefan and Jan immediately rushed to help. One of the rescue workers obviously also slipped and carried his colleagues along with it; both fell
together with the tourist in the steep Melzergrund (Doliną Łomniczki). Neither J. Messner nor the tourist survived the 800 m fall. Š. Spusta died shortly before being transported to the hospital from the consequences of his fatal head injury.
