Rowington Wharf is a minor waterways place on the Grand Union Canal (Warwick and Birmingham Canal: widened section - Main Line) between Budbrooke Junction (Junction of Saltisford Arm and Grand Union Main Line) (6 miles and 4 furlongs and 21 locks to the east) and Kingswood Junction (Junction of Grand Union and Stratford upon Avon Canals) (6¼ furlongs to the northwest).

Barrel Vaulted (roof) Cottages unique on the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal. This is an example of the type of a lock-keeper's cottage the design of which was quite unique to the Stratford upon Avon Canal. During construction of the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal - in order to save money - the cottages were single storey and had such barrel vaulted roofs. This inexpensive type of roof is ideal for construction of rectangular shaped buildings and is simply a sequence of spaced arches placed beside each other. It is also mentioned sometimes that these roofs were particularly easy to construct since the framework knowledge was already available because of the canal bridge designs.

Kingswood Arm (Stratford Canal)

Highlight • Structure

The Kingswood Arm is an extremely short section of the Stratford Canal, linking it with the Warwick & Birmingham Canal (now the Grand Union Canal).

Length 0.25 mile

The branch includes one lock (numbered 20), but a few years ago a direct connection was reopened to the short pound between locks 21 and 22 of the southern Stratford.

Kingswood Junction

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

Kingswood junction marks the junction between the Stratford upon Avon Canal and the Warwick and Birmingham Canal. The orignal plan was for the connection to be one and three quarter miles long, with a quarter mile tunnel under the main street of Lapworth. This was evidently too difficult or expensive as in the event a short simple branch was made without recourse to tunnelling. However, due to temporary shortage of funds the Stratford Canal terminated here in a basin until 1812. As per its authorising act, the canal was suitably locked to allow the passage of one lockful of water to the WBC when a boat passed in either direction. At the recommencement of cutting, however, the locking was changed so that in some circumstances the WBC could lose water. After much legal wrangling a new branch was built which met the Stratford Canal above, rather than below, lock 21. This was opened in December 1818.
