Brouwerssluis (Seal Viewing Point)

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Brouwers Lock was opened in 1978 to keep Lake Grevelingen saltwater and maintain water quality. The Brouwers Lock connects the North Sea and Lake Grevelingen. The lock consists of two 4.5 x 6 m conduits. A separate fish conduit with a diameter of 2 m has also been constructed for fish migration. When both conduits are open, an average of 125 m³ per second flows through. At high and low tide, the flow rate is much higher!

Lake Grevelingen is a closed-off former inlet. It was created by the construction of the Delta Works: the Grevelingen Dam (1965) and the Brouwers Dam (1971). It is a saltwater system with a dampened artificial tide of a maximum of 10 cm. The water system consists of deep channels and islands surrounded by old sea dikes. Its main functions are nature, recreation, and fishing. Lake Grevelingen has a surface area of 14,000 hectares, of which 10,800 hectares are water. The average water depth is 5.4 m and the deepest is 48 m.

The lake level is maintained between -0.10 and -0.30 m above sea level.

Brouwersdam Water Sports Center

Highlight • Rest Area

The Kabbelaarsbank on Brouwersdam is one of the youngest areas in the Netherlands. It is also the most southern corner of South Holland: the water south of the Kabbelaarsbank is already flowing in the province of Zeeland. The Kabbelaarsbank was originally set up as a working island for the implementation of the Delta Plan. It was discovered by windsurfers in the late 1970s. The brisk breeze and the shallow coastal waters made the island on Brouwerdsdam an excellent destination. Tourist facilities developed very slowly. The Natuur- en Recreatieschap Grevelingen, which is responsible for the administration of the area, paid close attention. Only mobile devices such as a fries stall got a permit. And of course the outpatient surf school of Pieternel van der Linde and Uwe Jendrusch. With a caravan as a "school building" they gave surf lessons to groups during the weekends.

Seal Watching Spot

Seals can often be found in the choppy water. Check carefully if you can see the heads. They often quickly go back into hiding.

Brouwersdam Beach

Highlight • Beach

The Brouwersdam is a remarkable hydraulic engineering project that connects the provinces of Zeeland and South Holland, while also forming the border between the Grevelingenmeer and the North Sea. This imposing structure was designed with multiple functions in mind and a fundamental influence on Dutch water management and recreation.

One of the main purposes of the Brouwersdam is to implement water levels. The dam separates the salty water of the North Sea from the fresher water of the Grevelingenmeer. It will be possible to accurately manage the water level in the Grevelingenmeer, resulting in improved water quality and more control over the area. It is one of the many hydraulic engineering projects that the Netherlands has implemented to protect itself against flooding and to protect efficient water management.

In addition to its most important functions in the field of water management, the Brouwersdam has developed into a major tourist destination. The area around the dam offers numerous opportunities for recreation, including water sports such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and swimming. Water sports enthusiasts like to come here because of the weak wind conditions and the protected waters on the Grevelingenmeer side.

Although the construction of the dam has had an impact on the ecology of the Grevelingenmeer, the area has also created opportunities for nature conservation. The closed connection between the North Sea and the lake has led to the development of unique ecosystems and offers opportunities for the conservation of nature and biodiversity.

Cycling and walking paths have been constructed along the Brouwersdam, so that visitors can enjoy the beautiful coastline and natural environment. It is an ideal destination for tours and excursions, with breathtaking views of both the Grevelingenmeer and the North Sea.
