Lippe River

Highlight • River

The Lippe is one of the most idyllic rivers in Germany. In 2018 the water was even named "River Landscape of the Year". Most of the floodplains along the Lippe are under nature protection, but the nitrate levels in the Lippe are very high. As a tributary of the Rhine, the Lippe is 220 kilometers long and meanders through North Rhine-Westphalia .

The mother Anna statue, which was produced in a sculpture workshop in Haltern and in which every year in September to "Kreuzerhöhung" and the Halterner Kreuztracht passes with almost 700 years old suffering crucifix, was included in 1998 with a modern design protection. In the building "Muttergottesiege" behind the statue are u.a. the branch office of the adult education center Dülmen / Haltern am See / Havixbeck as well as offices of the city administration Haltern am See.

Rekumer Gate

Highlight • Monument

The former so-called "Rekenbiärger Paorte" was one of the four ancient gates of the city fortifications of Haltern. In the 17th century, "wood dishes" were held here once a year. The information board gives an impression of the former imposing facility.

The old town hall was built between 1575 and 1577 with curved Renaissance gables. After the war, it was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt in a simplified form. Since the interior was renovated between 1996 and 1998, it has now housed the registry office and the tourist information office. It also carries out tasks in the tourism and cultural sectors. In addition to civil weddings, cultural events, receptions and awards are held here. On the gable facing the market there is a carillon, a gift from the city savings bank for the city's 700th birthday in 1989 (see entrance for performance times). The front is decorated with the Haltern city coat of arms (stylized horse halter) and a sundial. The market square has always been a meeting place for young and old, for residents and visitors to the city. It was made "traffic-free" in 1983/84. The fountain from 1988 is reminiscent of the hand pump that was previously present here and served as a water supply until 1907. The bronze figure group was created by the Haltern artist Helmut Schlüter in 1988.
