A Kahnhebehaus is a descent structure as an older form of ship's hoist. In canals that had to overcome differences in height in the landscape, barge lifting houses with pulleys and trolleys were used to raise or lower the barges from one level to another, which was done with muscle power. In Germany one can find the remains of two Kahnhebehauses: the Halsbrücke Kahnhebehaus on the Freiberger Mulde (sometimes called the Rothenfurther Kahnhebehaus) in the course of the Churprinzer Bergwerkskanal, built in 1788/89, and the Großvoigtsberg Kahnhebehaus (sometimes also called the Christbescherunger Kahnhebehaus), also in the Near Freiberg, which was intended to overcome the difference in altitude between a weir pond in the Mulde and the Christbescherunger mine canal (built in 1791). Master builder was the Freiberg art master and later machine director Johann Friedrich Mende (1743-1798).
