Nymphenburg Palace Park

Highlight • Natural

The Nymphenburg Canal is an artificial waterway in Munich that was built between 1701 and 1703 under Elector Max Emanuel as a form of forced labor. It continues the optical axis of the palace, the line of sight from Nymphenburg Palace to the east towards the city center.

The Temple of Apollo in the Nymphenburg Palace Park stands on a peninsula on the shore of Lake Badenburg. It is a sandstone monopteros with ten columns in the Corinthian style. The building was built according to a plan by Leo von Klenze in 1862-65. Inside there is a stele with a dedication by King Ludwig I. It is an eye-catcher on the lake and allows the visitor a beautiful view over the water surface of the lake. Before the construction of this temple of Apollo, there was twice a wooden round temple on the promontory. The first was built in 1805 for the Electress' birthday. When this had become brittle, Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell suggested building a round stone temple. After his idea was rejected, a slightly larger replacement building made of larch wood was built in 1818.

Badenburg (Bath House)

Highlight • Historical Site

For centuries, the Badenburg at the southeastern end of the Great Lake was the first major building in Europe exclusively dedicated to the purpose of enjoying a comfortable bath. Joseph Effner planned the pleasure palace and built it from 1718 to 1722. In addition to the large bathing hall, which extends over two floors, it also contains a ballroom and an electoral apartment with a bedroom, writing room, and dressing room. The bathing pool, over fifty square meters in size and holding 80,000 liters of water, was unparalleled in its time, not only as a work of art but also in technical terms.

Nymphenburg Palace

Highlight • Castle

One should have been here at any time of the year. 😊 The construction took place in sections and is based on Italian models. The park was also redesigned several times.

Highlight • Historical Site

A stay in Munich without Nymphenburg Palace is almost unthinkable. Spacious park with a beautiful castle.

In the original baroque park design, there was only an ornamental pool. The so-called "small lake" was created in 1813 as part of the landscaping by F.L. Sckell. The Pagodenburg reflecting in the lake is now part of an idealized natural landscape.

Nymphenburg Canal

Highlight • River

The Würm is the outflow of Lake Starnberg. In Pasing, a part of the water is diverted and redirected to the park of Nymphenburg Palace, to design the central baroque water axis and to operate the cascades and water features. Real landscape art.

After permanent fog was announced yesterday, everything made up for it today and I set off early in the direction of Nymphenburg to see if everything was still in place. Everything is still there: the Badenburg, the Amalienburg, the witches' cottage (pavilion in the crown prince's garden), the castle itself, the Magdalenenklause, the Pagodenburg and also the Monopterus (Apollo's temple). …

A nice hike in Munich in glorious weather, first along the Nymphenburg Canal when I was "free" in the morning. The tour also went from Nymphenburg to Blutenburg Castle (apart from 2 km in the city) through a coherent green area.
Since my battery was dead, the last 3km along the Würm are missing.

What a beautiful autumn day⛅️🍂🍁, perfect for the "Castle and Water Tour" of the Munich Trail! The starting point was the finish of the last stage, the Hirschgarten. We quickly reached the park of Nymphenburg Palace with the Amalienburg and the Badenburg. On an idyllic hiking trail along the Würm we reached the original village center of Obermenzing. There is …
