View of Addleborough from Semer Water

Highlight • Lake

The best long distance view of Addleborough is from this vantage spot looking over from Semer Water. A beautiful view on a clear day.

Gayle Beck Waterfall in Hawes

Highlight • Viewpoint

This here must be the easiest to see waterfall in the Yorkshire Dales! - it literally is in the middle of the village of Hawes, as Gayle Beck flows through it. As you cross the river on the bridge here, make sure to stop and admire. It's a beautiful view, and the sound of water is enchanting.

Here's where they make proper Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese, so you can go into the visitors centre and explore their 'cheese experience' if you're interested. Alternatively, go to the shop and cafe for a quick sit-down. The cafe is open daily from 9:00am to 3.30pm, and has beautiful views from its huge windows, as well as a great cheese-y menu.

Haylands Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

Haylands Bridge is a grade II-listed structure on a meander of the River Ure outside the market town of Hawes. Its two classic arches make for a great photo, with green, rolling pastures beyond.

Synonymous with Wensleydale cheese, Hawes is one of the highest market towns in England at 850 feet (259 m) above sea level. There are records of a market here right back to 1307 and on a Tuesday you can still expect a lively trade.

Being an important stop off on a couple of long-distance trails, there are plenty of places to rest your head at night. If you want to delve deeper into what makes this rural community tick, the Dales Countryside Museum is well worth a visit. The surrounding countryside is glorious, with great hiking on the windswept Pennine moors.

Semer Water

Highlight • Natural Monument

Semer Water is the second largest natural lake in England, the first being Malham Tarn. It is half a mile long. Beside walkers like yourself, it attracts people who like canoeing and fishing or anyone who loves beautiful natural places in beautiful settings.

On the northern bank, there is a car park, which is a good starting point. Spot the massive boulder nearby - these are called erratics, not native to this area, and carried over during the last Ice Age by the glacier. The same glacier carved the entire valley and, indeed, the lake.
