St. Catherine's Chapel Ruins (Kapellbuck)

Highlight • Religious Site

The 585 meter high Kapellbuck is the location of Hechlingen's landmark - the ruins of the St. Katharinen Chapel. The chapel was built in the first half of the 15th century. When a renovation planned in 1715 failed, the old church began to decay. In 1880, the tower fell victim to a storm.

The ruins have been a listed building since 1903.

A former beer cellar is located on the northern slope of the "Kapellbuck" directly below the chapel.
The Hechlinger Hohlweg leads from the village directly past the cellar. The cellar has existed for centuries and the Hechlinger Brewery Müller stored its draft beer there for secondary fermentation and maturation. In the beer cellar, which was used until around 1900, cellar festivals used to take place at Whitsun. The Hechlingen Tourist Association repaired the dilapidated cellar. About twelve meters of the former facility are freely accessible.

Hechlingen Hollow Way

Highlight • Gorge

The Hechlinger Hohlweg is also called "Schafgasse". The path is around 250 meters long and cuts up to 9 meters deep into the surrounding landscape. This makes it one of the largest and most impressive hollow ways in the Hahnenkamm region.

The path was created over thousands of years. Mass amounts of water first washed away the soil and cut into the sandstone. Cattle drives, carts and use as a footpath then created the current hollow way. The path used to be one of the main routes from Hechlingen to the fields and pastures on the Kapellenberg and the Katharinenkapelle.

The hollow way is accessible to tourists with a local and natural history educational trail around 1.8 km long and created in 2010. The path has two wooden gates at the beginning and end. Some information boards accompany him up to St. Catherine's Chapel (komoot.de/highlight/740845).

With the great weather, we have of course also planned something hiking-wise. We had two hikes open in this area that weren't that long, so we quickly merged them.
This tour was really really nice. In the sunny weather, it's twice as much fun.
The few highlights were really worth the trip.
Oh yes, finally with shorts again :=)
