Neipperg Castle

Highlight • Castle

A particularly dramatic episode occurred in 1525 during the German Peasants' War. The peasants, rebelling against the oppression and high taxes of the nobles, laid siege to Neipperg Castle. The siege was fierce and the castle's defenders had to stand up bravely against the attackers. Eventually the Lords of Neipperg managed to repel the siege, but the damage to the castle was considerable.

After the war, the castle was rebuilt and reinforced to better withstand future attacks. These events shaped the history of the castle and made it a symbol of the resistance and steadfastness of the Lords of Neipperg.

The Waldschenke Hörnke is a very popular destination in the region. When the weather is nice, you can see as far as Stuttgart and enjoy the surrounding area. However, you will have to pay a princely sum for this. The prices are really very high for a self-service restaurant.

View of Neipperg Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Neipperg Castle is a hilltop castle and the ancestral castle of the Lords and Counts of Neipperg. It dates back to the 12th century and is located in Neipperg, now a district of Brackenheim, in the Heilbronn district of Baden-Württemberg.

Neipperg Castle has two massive towers, which give rise to speculation about two separate castles from different eras that were surrounded by a common ring wall: the Upper Castle and the slightly older Lower Castle. The tower of the Upper Castle was built around 1220, and its arcade windows were probably made by craftsmen from the Maulbronn Monastery's workshop.

The complex could have always been the seat of the Neipperg family, first mentioned in a reinbot in 1241. The oldest fief documents date from 1304/06, when the brothers Konrad and Wilhelm von Neipperg received the castle, including vineyards and fields, from the Bishopric of Würzburg as a fief, which their father Warmundus had probably already owned. In the 14th century, ownership of the castle was fragmented. In 1321, the Lords of Weinsberg sold their shares in the castle to the Counts of Württemberg. In 1331, another part of the castle went from the Neipperg family to Count Eberhard the Greiner, who, however, transferred this share back to Reinbot of Neipperg in 1362, who granted the right to redemption and promised to open the castle. In 1364, Reinbot was able to buy back another part of the castle from the Meiser family, which they had acquired through the marriage of a Neipperg heir.

In addition to a manor house in Schwaigern, Neipperg Castle was one of the main seats of the Lords of Neipperg until the 16th century, before it was moved to Klingenberg Castle and in 1702 to the newly built Schwaigern Castle.

In 1831/32, the palace building was uninhabited and dilapidated. Around 1850, the complex was converted into a farm under Count Alfred von Neipperg. The farm buildings and tenant's apartment date from this time. The complex, which included almost half of the municipality's area, was leased as a castle estate. (Source: Wikipedia)
