St. Laurentius Evangelical Lutheran Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The parish church of St. Laurentius in Repperndorf in Lower Franconia is the Evangelical-Lutheran church in the Kitzinger district. The church is on the Alte Reichsstraße in the center of the village and belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Deanery of Kitzingen. Today there is also a Catholic Laurentius church in town.
The history of the church is closely linked to that of the village. Repperndorf was first mentioned in sources in the 11th century. At that time the Benedictine monastery in Kitzingen was the landlord. The nuns encouraged the construction of a small church, the tower of today's church dates back to the 13th century. By the 14th or 15th century at the latest, Repperndorf became an independent parish. In 1440 it was subordinate to the cathedral chapter of Würzburg, which also appointed the pastor.

In the meantime, the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach had become lords of the village. Between 1525 and 1530 they introduced the Reformation in their dominions, and Repperndorf also became Protestant. Nevertheless, Catholics continued to live in the village. Only between 1606 and 1629 did Repperndorf become a purely Protestant village. During this time, the tower and the nave of the church were raised and the equipment was adapted to the new teaching.

During the Thirty Years' War, the Catholic-Imperial troops expelled the Protestant pastor from the village and installed a Catholic priest. During this time, the Repperndorf Protestants received pastoral care from the Magdalenenkirche in Buchbrunn. The Laurentiuskirche remained connected to its counterpart in Buchbrunn until the 19th century, and the pastor from Repperndorf also preached in Buchbrunn.

After the Peace of Westphalia, the church became Protestant again. However, the Catholics were granted the right to use the church as well, which is how the Simultaneum came about. The Catholics formed a branch of the nearby Sulzfeld and were looked after by the local pastor from then on. The Catholics from Buchbrunn had also been visiting the Evangelical Laurentius Church since 1736, which was tolerated by the community.

Kitzingen Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The city of Kitzingen is located in the Lower Bavarian Lower Franconia on the banks of the Main in Maindreieck. The center of the historic old town is the market place, framed by Franconian half-timbered houses, imposing town houses and the Renaissance town hall. Architectural highlights are the city church of Petrini with its mighty portal of the Franconian Baroque, the late Gothic church of St. John with its impressive exterior sculptures and the famous cross chapel of Balthasar Neumann. Of course, there are many places to eat.
