Historic Town Hall Moselkern

Old Town Hall of Moselkern

History timeline of the oldest town hall on the Moselle:

1535 Construction began as a community center.

1590 Expansion of the undersized town hall with a generous extension. The result was an impressive example of Moselle-Franconian half-timbered construction, with side and fire walls up to one meter thick, as well as elaborate and rare half-timbered structures. The building served as the town hall and mayor's residence. It was used for meetings of citizens and councilors.

1638 (Thirty Years' War) The house was requisitioned by a Swedish dragoon colonel. During this time, it served as the regimental headquarters.

1787 A pillory ring was installed (to the right of the entrance door). It served as a means of atonement and deterrence.

1798 The French central administration, with its new legal system, abolished the punishment of being pilloried. The year 1535 inscribed on the pillory stone is a forgery.

The French central administration ended Moselkern's independence. The town hall became superfluous.

The building served as an emergency church for several years. (Reconstruction of the parish church)

Early 19th century > The building served as a school and teacher's residence and was increasingly left to decay.

Mid-19th century > Poorhouse and homeless shelter. Even greater decay from the 1950s onwards.

In 1907, local priest, Difinitor Alois Conradi, acquired the building from the municipality of Moselkern and donated it to the parish.

Renovation and partial replacement of the half-timbering.

Establishment of the "Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus." The house was given the name "Haus Nazareth" or, colloquially, "Kloesterchen" (little monastery). Until 1969, the 8-10 sisters initially served only the needs of the workers and families of the wool industry in the Elz Valley, but soon served the entire community as a kindergarten, sewing school, and nursing home.

A very nice villa that exudes a certain morbidity. It reminds of past glittering times ...
