It was the only intact bridge across the Rhine in Allied hands, and two attempts by the defenders to blow it up ended in failure. The capture of the bridge was called the "Miracle of Remagen". The Germans tried to destroy the bridge using planes and V2 rockets, but without success. On March 17, 1945, the Ludendorff Bridge collapsed due to damage - 30 American soldiers lost their lives.
