Ice Age Pond of the Hohenheim Gardens

Highlight • Lake

In this part of the Botanical Garden, the immigration of the native woody plants of southern Germany during the post-glacial period is shown. The changing climatic conditions between ice ages and warm periods caused a very diverse change in flora and fauna.

On the northern slope the development of the vegetation of the mountain forest region is shown. Along the stream you can see the flora of the river landscapes, and on the southern slopes the warmer lowlands and the hills. The glacial vegetation surrounds the two ponds in the eastern part of the garden.

In the last 2.5 million years, the Earth's climate has regularly changed between ice ages and pronounced warm periods of today's character, the interglacials. The average length of the ice ages was about 80,000 to 100,000 years, that of the interglacials about 10,000 to 15,000 years. The current warm period lasted about 11,600 years. It is coming to an end, as is known from many observations.

Humans have increasingly influenced the environment during the last 7,000 to 9,000 years. The consequences for vegetation in southern Germany are shown in this appendix on the basis of selected examples.

The Botanical Garden, with approximately 13.4 hectares of land, forms the largest part of Hohenheim's green spaces, along with the State Arboretum (approximately 16.5 hectares). The Hohenheim Gardens have been a special attraction in the south of Stuttgart for over 200 years. As a scientific institution, the Botanical Garden's grounds support research and teaching at the University of Hohenheim.

Hohenheim Playhouse

Highlight • Historical Site

The playhouse was built in 1788/89 as one of the last buildings in Hohenheim's English Garden. Tuscan columns, supporting the entablature and balustrade, divided the façade into five longitudinal and three transverse axes. The building housed a large hall furnished only with 22 cane chairs and two stoves, inviting visitors to play on rainy days.
It had to be restored as early as 1810 and again in 1816. In 1841, it was rebuilt again, the columns removed, and a gardener's apartment was added. The newly added walls of the playhouse were decorated with watercolors by Joseph Neher depicting Heideloff's scenes of the garden. From 1929 onward, church services were held there. Today, the playhouse houses a museum dedicated to the history of Hohenheim.
