Val Mora Gravel Tour

This gravel tour is one of the most scenic round tours in the region. It has been a classic for mountain bikers for decades. It is not without reason that many gravel bikers are now discovering this tour, because even advanced riders are increasingly looking for higher technical standards. With a mix of unpaved paths and easy single trails, the tour is ideal for you if you are very sporty and, above all, technically safe with your gravel bike off-road. Be prepared for some pushing passages, both on the ascent and descent.

From St. Maria, a first long climb takes you on a gravel path to Döss Radond, which marks the transition to Val Mora. On the way, Val Vau offers you wonderful views of the surrounding peaks and imposing waterfalls. A fantastic gravel section leads through the Val Mora. A somewhat more demanding meadow path begins near Alp Mora, which ultimately continues as a narrow single trail to the Italian border. If you are already hungry, you can keep to the right at the junction and have a snack at the rustic Alp Mora. There is delicious home-made cheese and farmer's bread, but also small warm dishes.

Historic paths lead to the shore of Lago di Livigno, where the second challenging climb awaits you. As soon as you have left the Höhenweg on the lake shore, the trail meanders in numerous serpentines through a dense mountain pine forest and over alpine meadows to Fuorcla del Gal. This is never really steep, but should not be underestimated due to the relatively rough ground. At Fuorcla del Gal you cross the border again, this time back to Switzerland, where you are at the dream place Jufplaun. You reach Alp Buffalora via the picturesque plateau with a view of the Swiss National Park. An extremely steep gravel path leads down to the rustic alpine pasture and continues flat across the wide alpine meadows to the pass road, which leads to the Ofen Pass. On the road you finally get to the top of the pass relatively relaxed compared to the previous passes. From now on it's (almost) all downhill and you can enjoy the wonderful landscape that rushes past you.

Tip: Just a few kilometers off your route in Val di Fraele are the two reservoirs Lago di San Giacomo and Lago di Cancano. Its azure water is legendary and the view of the surrounding mountains of the Stelvio National Park is overwhelming. On the lake there is the Rifugio Val Fraele, right next to the dam of the upper lake and the Ristoro San Giacomo on the southwest shore. You can circle the Lago di San Giacomo on a gravel road and finally return to the tour.
