Very impressive to see such small fishing boats on this beach. When I imagine that they are going out with the swell...

A place that you cannot miss in Lanzarote. Access to the lake is from El Golfo. Access on the other side is cut off.

Lava Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

Since El Golfo is on the edge of the national park, you also have a great view of the volcanic craters. A trip to El Golfo is therefore very worthwhile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level of this hike, and is it suitable for beginners?

This circular hike is rated as moderate. While not overly long at approximately 8.6 km with about 120 meters of elevation gain, the terrain is rugged and uneven due to volcanic rock. Hikers should have a good level of fitness and be sure-footed. It might be challenging for absolute beginners without prior hiking experience on similar terrain.

What is the terrain and scenery like on this trail?

The trail traverses a dramatic volcanic "lunar landscape" with lava flows, pumice stones, and volcanic ash. You'll see different types of lava, such as "aa" and "pahoehoe." The coastal sections offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, where black volcanic rock meets wild waves. Near El Golfo, you can observe the first signs of plant life emerging from the lava. Be aware that there is very little to no shade along the entire route.

What landmarks or viewpoints will I see along the way?

Starting from El Golfo, you'll be near the famous Charco de los Clicos - Green Lake. The route also takes you past the El Golfo Fishermen's Beach, a unique Lava Arch, and the striking Playa del Paso (Black Sand Beach, Timanfaya National Park). The hike culminates near Montaña Quemada, offering panoramic views of the volcanic landscape and coastline.

Where does this circular hike start, and is there parking available?

This circular hike starts and ends in El Golfo. There is parking available in the village of El Golfo, which serves as a convenient starting point for the trail.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail in Timanfaya National Park?

Unlike some other areas within Timanfaya National Park that require guided tours or bus access, this specific circular route from El Golfo along the coast to Montaña Quemada appears to be a self-guided hiking opportunity. Therefore, you typically do not need a specific permit for this particular trail, nor is there an entrance fee for this section of the park.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are not permitted on trails within Timanfaya National Park to protect the fragile ecosystem and wildlife. It is best to confirm local regulations before planning to bring a dog on this hike.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

Lanzarote enjoys a mild climate year-round, making this trail accessible for most of the year. However, the cooler months from October to May are generally more comfortable for hiking, avoiding the peak heat of summer. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as coastal winds can be strong.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Given the rugged volcanic terrain, sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good ankle support are essential. Wear comfortable, layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures and wind. Bring plenty of water, as there is no shade or water sources along the route. Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) is also highly recommended due to the exposed nature of the trail.

What unique natural features or wildlife can I expect to see?

The primary natural feature is the extraordinary volcanic geology, a direct result of the 1730-1736 eruptions. Despite the harsh environment, the coastal route is ideal for bird watching, with species like shearwaters, seagulls, plovers, and terns. You can also observe approximately 180 different species of lichens thriving on the lava rocks, sustained by humidity from the trade winds.

Does this route connect with other trails in Timanfaya National Park?

Yes, this route incorporates sections of other well-known paths. You will be hiking along parts of the Ruta de Tremesana and the Ruta del Litoral, which are official trails within Timanfaya National Park.

Is this hike suitable for families with children?

While the trail is rated moderate, its rugged and uneven volcanic terrain requires sure-footedness. It might be suitable for older children with hiking experience and good stamina. For younger children or those less accustomed to hiking, the challenging footing and lack of shade could make it difficult. Consider their fitness level and comfort with rocky paths before attempting this route as a family.

November 15, 2024, Timanfaya National Park - circular from El Golfo along the coast to Montaña Quemada

A version of this nice walk following allowed paths.

A great hike: Starting at the parking lot with a detour to the green lake and the black beach with the fishing boats (not recorded), at the beginning of the village right up through the lava landscape past Montaña Quemada to a small caldera and a view of the Timanfaya, which you cannot see here may commit. Then back to the Quemada volcano and up to look from above into the colorful crater and the wide landscape to the sea. 360 °. Walk around the rim of the crater (above or inside) and then keep right back to the sea. Here you enter Timanfaya on foot and it is the only place where this is allowed without a guide. You walk through impressive lava fields with a view of the surrounding volcanoes. This is the youngest lava field. Before that there was water. You walk straight through to the beautiful black Playa del Paso. Enjoy there and go back to the fork on the barely recognizable path to the right into the lava fields back by the sea to El Paso. This is the Ruta del Litoral, which leads opposite to Playa de los Cochinos. Good shoes are essential here. Lava is as sharp as glass. Always look down nicely. Finally, a paella at sunset and petting a few street cats. I do not need more. Luck to the power of 10. (PS: many photo stops and moments of pleasure on the way. Grass would be wrong)

Some coastal lava walk trying to watch the amazing surf without falling Later easy unsurfaced vehicle track to base

Half of the route is on the typical lava paths, the rest is a motorway. If you like the terrain, the coastal section is particularly great.

Before starting the hike, an obligatory stop at the legendary VERDE lake, two minutes from the parking lot. Nice hike which will take us to the entrance to the National Park - ℹ️ bring good shoes because there are lots of lava stones on the edge of the ocean.

Interesting hike. However, climbing the Vulkano del Roja is prohibited and is monitored by park rangers. El Golvo is an unsympathetic village where you can't get anything to drink if you don't want to eat.

It's worth doing the tour anti-clockwise! First the spectacular hinterland, then the stunning coastal path! Stop off at the first restaurant and enjoy!

February 6, 2025, El Golfo loop Hike

Very nice loop from El Golfo. We adjustted the last part a little so we wouldn't have to walk on the road. You could also Reverse The Walk because The start along The Coast is the most beautiful.
