This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as difficult. While some sections are accessible, it features varied terrain with rocky stretches and a technical ascent between the fifth and sixth kilometer. Sure-footedness and good fitness are recommended for a comfortable experience.
The trail typically starts in the perched village of Gordes. Parking is available in and around Gordes, though it can be busy, especially during peak season. It's advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, given the varied terrain, including rocky sections, and the presence of wildlife, it's recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in sensitive areas or when passing other hikers.
The best time to hike the Trail of the Maquis de Gordes via Véroncle is during spring (April-June) or early autumn (September-October). During these periods, the weather is usually pleasant, and you can enjoy the blooming wildflowers or the autumn colors. Summer can be very hot, making early morning hikes essential.
No, there are generally no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Trail of the Maquis de Gordes via Véroncle within the Parc naturel régional du Luberon. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
The trail offers varied terrain. It starts with a descent from Gordes, then gently ascends through Mediterranean garrigue and rocky sections. You'll encounter dry stone walls and typical scrubland. Be prepared for some technical parts, particularly between the fifth and sixth kilometer, where sure-footedness is essential.
The route offers a rich blend of natural beauty and historical sites. You'll pass by the ruins of a former water mill at Le Moulin Cabrier and traverse the scenic Gorges de Véroncle. The trail also provides panoramic views of the Vaucluse Mountains and the Luberon valley, and passes through areas with historical significance related to the Maquis (Resistance fighters) of Gordes.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Sentier du Maquis de Gordes par Véroncle, the GTV VTT Étape 5 : Saint-Saturnin-les-Apt => Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, and the Piste du Bois d'Audibert, among others.
The trail starts in the village of Gordes, where you'll find various amenities including cafes, restaurants, and public restrooms. Once you leave the village and head onto the trail, there are no further facilities, so plan accordingly.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support, sufficient water (especially in warmer months as there's no water source on the trail), snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a map or GPS device. A first-aid kit is also advisable.
The trail holds significant historical importance as it serves as a 'memory lane' honoring the Maquis (Resistance fighters) of Gordes who sought refuge in these mountains during World War II. Information boards along the route provide insights into this poignant period of history, connecting hikers to the region's past.
Very nice course, quite technical in the first half. Very average markings and possibility of making mistakes often without this application (and even with it to tell the truth!). Suitable shoes and physical condition are recommended for this sometimes alpine course. Watch out for the gravel during the steep climbs, it slips away underfoot despite the suitable shoes! Incredible viewpoints that are worth the effort. Warning: after about 7km, passage through a private property is mandatory. Possibility of going around it on the right but access to the marked path at the back always seems to be in the private part (chains placed I imagine by the owner).
Thanks Nico, the best thing is near Gorde-les-Gorges with the mills. I left at noon with my snack to give myself a bit of extra time on the way back. I didn't know how many kilometers it was. I think you have to be at least fit to do it. So, if I can do it, anyone can do it and discover this charming and historic place.
