10 miles flat ride from Neptune’s Gate. There are benches to stop and refresh. You can either backtrack to Neptune’s Gate, or cross the canal and ride back to Neptune’s Gate on sealed road it’s a few inclines. Or you can ride 11 miles to Laggan....or keep going to Fort Augustus or Inverness. There is an old lighthouse also. This is part of Loch Lochy. Worth a trip! 🚲

Caledonian Canal

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Caledonian Canal runs for 60 spectacular miles (100km) through Scotland's Great Glen, connecting Inverness on the east coast with Corpach near Fort William on the west coast. The canal was constructed in the early 1800s to designs by celebrated Scottish engineer, Thomas Telford. A third of the canal's length is man-made, with the rest being formed by the Great Glen Fault and taking in Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, and Loch Lochy. A multi-user path along its length makes it a perfect place to ride, run or hike.

Loch Lochy

Highlight • Viewpoint

The amusingly-named Loch Lochy is a lovely expanse of water in Lochaber. The area was not always as peaceful as it is today. In 1544, the Battle of the Shirts took place on its banks. Later in 1665, another battle ended a 360-year feud between the Chattan Confederation and the Camerons.

According to folklore, a supernatural river horse lives in the freshwater lake. With an average depth of 230 feet (70 m), Loch Lochy could be hiding all sorts of creatures in its waters.
