Hiking

Embark on the Sentiero Scannamugliera – Iazzo Ognissanti, a difficult 6.2-mile (10.0 km) hike through the Gargano National Park. This challenging route, with its 2145 feet (654 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 4 hours and 17 minutes to complete. As you navigate the varied terrain of dirt roads, rocky sections, and ancient mule tracks with steps carved directly into the rock, you'll be treated to sweeping panoramic views of the Gulf of Manfredonia and the Tavoliere delle Puglie. The trail immerses you in a unique rupestrian landscape, featuring deep valleys, dense Mediterranean scrub, and well-preserved agricultural terraces.

Planning your visit requires good physical training and sturdy footwear, as some sections are very technical and treacherous. It's best to avoid this trail during rainy conditions, as the terrain can become particularly difficult. The route is known for its significant elevation changes, so be prepared for a strenuous ascent and descent. Ensure you are well-prepared for a demanding hike before setting out.

This trail is steeped in history, often called the “Scala Santa” or Holy Staircase, as it was once a pilgrimage route to the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo. You'll encounter the evocative rupestrian church of Ognissanti, carved into the rock face and adorned with Byzantine-influenced frescoes. Nearby, the ancient rural settlement of Jazzo Ognissanti offers a glimpse into past agricultural life with its rock-hewn dwellings and communal facilities, making this a journey through both nature and time.

Scannamugliera Trail

Highlight • Trail

Trail with original name. The road to go up from the sea to the Mount was so steep as to terribly tire anyone. The name of "Scannamugliera" (tired women) bears witness to the distrust in the resistance capacity of wives and in general of the weakest people. However, the road was mainly traveled by farmers and shepherds who wanted to reach the caves that served as stables and the fields on high ground.

San Michele, is the main church of Monte Sant'Angelo and is a grotto church. What can be seen at the top of the hill is only the church's octagonal bell tower and the two-part entrance hall. The church itself is inside the mountain, it is a pilgrimage church dedicated to Archangel Michael.
