While some variations of the loop can be easier, this specific route requires a good fitness level. The terrain is varied, offering a mix of surfaces. You'll encounter sections of paved roads, quiet side streets, moderate trails, and dirt roads. The route winds through vineyards, olive groves, woods, and garrigue (Mediterranean scrubland). The area is characterized by limestone and sandstone, with unique eroded formations around the Rocher de Rocalinaud.
The highlight of this loop is undoubtedly the Rocher de Rocalinaud, known for its unique 'lunar landscape' of eroded sandstone formations and ancient human-made cavities. Beyond this, you'll pass through renowned vineyards producing Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, offering classic Provençal vistas. The trail also provides panoramic views of the Comtat Venaissin plain, the Rhône Valley, the Dentelles de Montmirail, and Mont Ventoux in the distance.
Yes, the Beaumes-de-Venise and Rocher de Rocalinaud loop is generally dog-friendly. Ensure you carry enough water for both yourself and your dog, as water sources on the trail are limited.
The best time to hike the Beaumes-de-Venise and Rocher de Rocalinaud loop is during spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is typically mild and pleasant, and the landscapes are vibrant with spring blooms or autumn colors in the vineyards. The Rocher de Rocalinaud is unique due to its geological history and distinctive appearance. It also features ancient man-made cavities and caves used for shelter from prehistoric times.
For this moderate hike, pack essentials like sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate footwear for varied terrain. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is recommended, especially during warmer months, as some sections are exposed. A light jacket might be useful for cooler mornings or evenings. A map or GPS device is also advisable, though the Komoot app can guide you.
Yes, the village of Beaumes-de-Venise offers several options for refreshments. You'll find cafes, restaurants, and local shops where you can enjoy a meal or a drink before or after your hike. Beaumes-de-Venise is particularly known for its Muscat wine, so consider visiting a local winery.
Not accessible by stroller, good physical condition necessary for carrying depending on baby's weight ☺️
From Beaume de Venice you have fantastic views of the near and far surroundings. I just love the Provençal landscapes: vines and olives on the smallest piece of land. The rock lies in the middle of vineyards and is a former dune! of pressed sand sculpted by rain, wind, ice and man. You can crawl around in it, but since I was traveling alone, I didn't do that...😕
There's not much to write. Just a nice round with beautiful views!🥰
