The best time to hike the Les Concluses and La Pierre Plantée Trail depends on what you want to experience. During the summer months, typically from mid-June, the Aiguillon Riverbed often dries up, allowing you to walk or scramble directly through the spectacular gorges of Les Concluses de Lussan. Outside of summer or after significant rainfall, the river can be high and impetuous, making access to the gorge floor difficult or even dangerous. Spring can offer unique natural bathing experiences in the river's pools, but always exercise caution with water levels.
The terrain is quite diverse. Within the gorges of Les Concluses de Lussan, it's wild, rocky, and uneven, featuring impressive limestone walls, giant potholes known as "marmites de géants," and natural arches. Higher routes offer forest paths and ridges, providing panoramic views of the canyon-like landscape, often described as "lunar." Good footwear is essential due to the rocky and sometimes steep sections.
While the trail is generally accessible, specific rules for dogs within the Sensitive Natural Area (ENS) of Les Concluses are not explicitly stated. Given the rocky and sometimes challenging terrain, especially within the gorges, and the presence of rare flora and fauna, it's advisable to keep dogs on a leash and ensure they are capable of handling the varied conditions. Always practice Leave No Trace principles.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Les Concluses and La Pierre Plantée Trail. It is a publicly accessible natural area.
The trail features several notable points of interest. You'll encounter the dramatic gorges of Les Concluses de Lussan, known for their unique geological formations like "Portails" (natural arches) and "Marmites du Diable" (giant potholes). The ancient La Pierre Plantée (menhir), a significant prehistoric monument, is also a key landmark. Don't miss the Les Concluses Viewpoint for spectacular panoramas, and enjoy the peaceful Forest Trail on the Heights of L’Aiguillon.
The Komoot route for the Les Concluses and La Pierre Plantée Trail starts from Lussan. There are parking options available in or near the village of Lussan, which serves as a convenient starting point for exploring the area. Specific parking instructions are usually available on local tourism websites or signage upon arrival.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. It's crucial to carry plenty of water, as there are no sales facilities directly on-site. Depending on the season, sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and rain gear might be necessary. A map or GPS device is also recommended, along with snacks and a first-aid kit.
The Les Concluses and La Pierre Plantée Trail is rated as "moderate" in difficulty. While some sections are manageable, the terrain within the gorges can be rocky, uneven, and sometimes steep, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. Beginners with some hiking experience and appropriate footwear should be fine, but those completely new to hiking might find it challenging, especially if attempting the full 16.5 km route.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several local paths. You will find yourself on parts of the "Le menhir, les Concluses" trail, as well as segments of "Chemin de la Tuilerie," "Chemin du Menhir," and "Chemin du Bourg Neuf."
During spring, when the Aiguillon River has flowing water, there can be natural pools (gours de l'Aiguillon) within Les Concluses de Lussan that offer unique natural bathing experiences. However, water levels vary significantly, and caution is always advised. Always assess conditions carefully before entering the water.
The isolated nature of parts of the area, such as "Eagle Rock," fosters a unique ecosystem. You might spot rare flora and fauna, including birds of prey like the Bonelli's Eagle and Egyptian Vulture, which are known to inhabit this Sensitive Natural Area (ENS).
Tough walk through the distance, the heat and the difference in height. This hike came from komoot and I don't think anyone has been on any of the trails for ages. It had grown a bit here and there. Under the scratches of the blackberry bushes but the journey completed. Went to the Concluses four years ago. Then there was water. Even drier than dry. It is almost impossible to imagine that fast flowing water has created this carved gorge.
