Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the main loop trail typically take to complete?

The main loop trail, rated as moderate, usually takes between 3 hours 31 minutes and 4 hours to complete. This covers a distance of approximately 10.2 kilometers with an elevation gain of about 467 meters.

Is the Cirque de Saint-Même loop suitable for beginners or families?

The main loop is rated as 'moderate' and requires a good fitness level and sure-footedness due to some steep and rocky sections. However, shorter, easier options are available, such as the 30-minute 'Fond du Cirque' (blue route) or a 1.5-hour 'Cascade Trail' (green route), which are more suitable for beginners and families wanting to see some of the waterfalls.

Where is the trailhead and parking for the Cirque de Saint-Même loop?

The trailhead is located at the Cirque de Saint-Même. Paid parking is typically in effect during the high season, from May to September. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends or during peak season, as the area can get crowded.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

The terrain is diverse, featuring winding forest trails, steep and rocky descents, and areas with tree roots. Paths can be wet, and some sections run close to cliff edges, requiring caution. You'll also find a green alluvial plain in the lower sections, perfect for picnics.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The trail's main highlights are the four impressive waterfalls: the Cascade des Sources, Grande Cascade, Cascade Isolée, and Pisse du Guiers. The Saint-Même Cirque Waterfalls are a major draw. You'll also pass by the Saint-Même Cirque Chalet and enjoy expansive views of the Grand Som range and the Pic de Chamechaude.

What is the best time of year to visit the waterfalls of the Cirque de Saint-Même?

The waterfalls are beautiful year-round, but spring and early summer often offer the most impressive water flow due to snowmelt. To avoid crowds, plan your visit on a weekday outside of peak school holiday periods. Paid parking is typically enforced from May to September.

Is the trail dog-friendly?

While the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park generally welcomes dogs, specific regulations may apply within the Réserve Naturelle des Hauts de Chartreuse, which this trail is part of. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Check local signage for any specific restrictions.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Réserve Naturelle des Hauts de Chartreuse?

There is no specific entrance fee or permit required to hike this trail within the Réserve Naturelle des Hauts de Chartreuse. However, as mentioned, parking typically incurs a fee during the high season (May to September).

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, this route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Tour de Chartreuse and the Traversée de la Chartreuse. You'll also find it crosses parts of the Sentier des Cascades and the Sentier du Fond du Cirque.

Are there any more challenging options for experienced hikers in the area?

Yes, for experienced hikers seeking a greater challenge, the 'Pas de la Mort' trail (black route) is available. This route is considerably longer and more technical, featuring cables, steps, and ramps in very steep sections, offering a more adventurous experience than the main loop.

What makes the Cirque de Saint-Même special?

The Cirque de Saint-Même is a unique natural amphitheater with 500-meter high limestone cliffs and four impressive waterfalls, making it an essential site in the Massif de Chartreuse. It's also part of the Hauts de Chartreuse National Nature Reserve, highlighting its ecological importance and offering the chance to discover the source of the Guiers-Vif river.

Trail Reviews

Jense Berlin
May 27, 2025, The waterfalls of the cirque de Saint-Même — loop in the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park

Great, in places somewhat strenuous hike that rewards with fantastic vistas and a stunning waterfall. Add the small loop inside the Cirque for some more waterfalls. Suitable for active dogs. Lots of streams cross the path to get some water. The bit up to the Grande Cascade requires a leash, and it's prohibited for dogs to cross into the nature reserve above the path.

Beautiful walk with quite steep parts here and there that are better to climb than to descend
