Bray Head Tower Walk

This is a moderate, family friendly 2-3 hour (7km) loop walk to Bray Head and along the coast at the west end of Valentia Island, Co. Kerry in South West Ireland. It's a steady climb to the tower with spectacular views of the Skellig Islands, the Kerry coast and the Wild Atlantic Way.

Bray Tower

Highlight • Monument

Bray Tower was built by the British as a signal point in the Napoleonic Wars (1815). It was used again in the second world war as part of the Coast Watching Service. Take a good look at the ground around you to find another historical artefact, the remnants of the word EIRE, crafted from large stones to let wartime planes know their location.

A short trip on Ireland's westernmost island, Valentia Island. The way to the Tower Walk is on a well-marked gravel path, the Bray Head Tower Walk, and the rest of the way to the summit is on a path over the island's spectacular cliffs. The way back leads back to the starting point on a wild trail through the moorland.

On the tour around the Ring of Kerry I made a little detour to Valentia Island. It was very windy and I have sore muscles from climbing Carrauntoohil. There won't be many more hikes. I'll probably walk the entire Ring of Kerry today, then look for a campsite and just do nothing for two days.
