Mountain biking

Embark on a journey infused with rich history, where you'll traverse dense woodlands, meander along open ridges and follow winding riverside tracks.

After passing the impressive Arundel Castle, the route weaves through forest trails and eventually climbs to Graffham Down on the South Downs Way. You'll enjoy panoramic ridge top views all the way to the Arun Valley, where the Tour joins the River Arun for a winding section along its banks.

As well as completing a section of the South Downs Way, you'll intersect with the historical hiking path, the Monarch's Way on several occasions. The route also traces a short woodland section of the West Sussex Literary Trail, a walking route rich in literary associations.

Most of the route is off-road with a fair few climbs, so you'll be best placed on a mountain or gravel bike.

This Tour benefits from some excellent pit stops so you won't be going hungry. The first is Arundel town centre with plenty of inviting cafes and pubs. You'll also cycle past a small supermarket shortly after the station starting point.

Just before the halfway point, you’ll reach East Dean, a charming village with a traditional 18th-century flint and brick pub called The Star and Garter. Next is the Cadence in Upwaltham, a cycling-themed cafe after a long descent from Graffham Down. Towards the end of your journey lies The Black Rabbit pub, nestled on the banks of the River Arun.

Your start and endpoint is Arundel station where you'll find half-hourly trains serving London Victoria, East Croydon, and Bognor Regis. For free parking close by, try the southern end of Crossbush Lane, where there are some informal spaces.

Bignor Hill stands proudly above the rolling countryside; rewarding those who climb to the summit with far-reaching views. According to Celtic legend, a dragon had its lair on top of the hill and its remains can still be seen in the folds of the ground.

River Arun Riverside Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is a lovely peaceful stretch of winding single track, alongside the banks of the Arun.

If you cross the river at the north end of this segment there are some great tight, technical trails that head south to the coast.

If you go just beyond the southernmost point of this segment there's a wonderful riverside pub at Offham.
