This loop is considered difficult or hard. It requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. While the initial forest section is easier, the ascent past the Bergeries de Colga becomes strenuous, involving steep rocky paths and some scrambling. The descent is often cited as being even harder than the climb, demanding careful foot placement.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn, generally June through September. During these months, the weather is more stable, and the snow has usually melted from the higher elevations. Always check local weather conditions before you go, as mountain weather can change rapidly.
Regulations regarding dogs in the Regional Natural Park of Corsica can vary. It's generally recommended to check with the park authorities directly before bringing your dog. Due to the presence of grazing wild animals and the sensitive ecosystem of the pozzines, dogs may be restricted or required to be on a leash at all times.
Generally, there is no specific entrance fee to access the Regional Natural Park of Corsica or to hike the Lac de Nino loop. However, it's always a good idea to check the official park website or local information centers for any updated regulations or specific permits that might be required for certain activities or areas, especially during peak season.
The trail offers diverse scenery, from the fragrant Valdo-Niolo forest with its ancient Laricio pines to rocky ascents. The highlight is undoubtedly the idyllic Lake Nino, famous for its 'pozzines' – unique marshy grasslands with interconnected freshwater pools. These areas are vital habitats for rare plants and animals, and you might even spot wild horses and cows grazing peacefully.
The most common starting point for the Lac de Nino loop is from the Poita car park, often accessed via the Col de Vergio. Parking can be limited, especially during peak season, so arriving early is highly recommended. Some sources suggest alternative starting points, but the Poita car park is the primary access for this specific loop.
Yes, the route intersects with sections of other famous trails. Approximately 33% of this loop follows the iconic GR 20 Principale, a renowned long-distance hiking route. A smaller section, about 7%, also overlaps with the GT20 / Étape 8 : Verghju - Corti.
Given its 'difficult' rating, strenuous sections, and technical demands, this loop is generally not recommended for children under 10-12 years old, especially without prior significant hiking experience. The descent, in particular, can be challenging for younger hikers.
You should bring sturdy hiking shoes with good ankle support, plenty of water (as sources can be scarce or unreliable), snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), rain gear, and appropriate layers of clothing as weather can change quickly. A map and compass or a GPS device are also advisable.
No, swimming in Lake Nino and walking on its unique pozzines are strictly forbidden. These are fragile ecosystems that are protected to preserve their rare flora and fauna. Please respect these regulations to help maintain the natural beauty and ecological balance of the area.
The area is known for its unique biodiversity. While hiking, you might spot wild horses and cows grazing peacefully, especially around the pozzines of Lake Nino. The forest sections are home to various bird species, and the entire park is a habitat for endemic plants and animals.
Popular family hike. Always follow the yellow markings ... up on the lake in summer, cattle and horses graze as well.
Very nice hike to Lac de Nino. At first it goes through light forest, which ensures pleasant temperatures in the summer months, later on the ascent over scree fields then a pleasant wind and the altitude also brings some cooling. At the lake there is a small fountain that provides cool water. This is where supplies can be replenished. The tour is strenuous in sections, occasionally you have to use your hands to help you scramble. However, we also met two groups with children. They did well too.
Absolutely exhausting, we were so exhausted... The lake is truly beautiful, with pastures and a spectacular backdrop.
Very beautiful! Very strenuous! Extremely sweaty! First through the forest, then a steep climb over large boulders. Always in the blazing sun – bring plenty of water and a hat 🥂
