This route was planned by komoot.
The trail starts near the historic town of Corte, making it easily accessible. You can typically find parking in or around Corte before heading to the trailhead.
The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife and other hikers. Ensure your dog is accustomed to hiking on varied terrain.
The best time to enjoy this hike is from mid-April to November. During these months, the weather is usually pleasant, and the natural pools are inviting for a swim. Avoid winter months as higher parts of the Mare à Mare Nord can be snow-capped.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Tavignano Gorges section of the Mare à Mare Nord Trail, even though it lies within the Parc Naturel Régional de Corse. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
The Tavignano Gorges hike is generally considered of moderate difficulty. It follows a well-marked ancient mule track with orange signs. While there are gentle climbs and undulations, it doesn't present significant technical challenges, making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable fitness level.
A typical round trip to the Russulinu Footbridge and Swimming Spot usually takes around 4.5 to 5 hours. The route covers approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) with an elevation gain of about 361 meters (1,185 feet).
The trail primarily follows an ancient mule track through a deep, enclosed gorge carved by the Tavignano River. You'll encounter dramatic granite cliffs, lush Mediterranean vegetation, and rich flora. The path generally undulates but stays relatively level, offering spectacular views of eroded granite and crystal-clear rock pools. You'll also see the Tavignano Valley.
Key highlights include the stunning Russulinu Footbridge and Swimming Spot, which offers inviting natural pools for swimming. The entire Tavignano Valley itself is a major point of interest, known for its wild beauty, granite cliffs, and serene atmosphere.
While there are a few springs along the way, it's strongly advised to carry at least two liters of water per person, especially during warmer months. Essential items include sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection, snacks, and swimwear if you plan to enjoy the natural pools.
The most common and recommended route through the Tavignano Gorges to the Russulinu Footbridge and Swimming Spot is an out-and-back trail. You follow the same path in and out, enjoying the scenery from different perspectives.
The Tavignano Gorges trail is often considered a less crowded yet equally magnificent alternative to the more frequented Restonica Valley. It offers a similar experience of deep gorges, clear rivers, and stunning natural beauty but with a greater sense of serenity and solitude.
Yes, this section is part of the longer Mare à Mare Nord Principal trail. The route also briefly intersects with the Chemin de l'Arche and the Chemin de Bagna.
The hike is highly recommended. However, you should remember to bring sun protection🧴, as there are shady passages, but they are rare. The climbs are quite gentle at first, only in the second half - after crossing a stream - does the gorge path become steadily steeper through beautiful rocky landscapes. After the descent to the Tavignano, a cool swim in the pools with crystal-clear water and a picnic await. And no, there is no cable car along the way 😉 - the recording on the way back was briefly interrupted.
Superb outing be careful to do it early in the morning. it is hot on the stones.
After a night in a storm, I take advantage of the morning clearings for a nice little hike to get my legs going.
We did a tres tres super beautiful hike through the Taviagno Valley. The valley is really a dream - easy to walk, magnificent views, varied, moderate gradient, not so busy (at least on Sunday afternoons at the end of the preseason) and a very nice place to swim at the end. And we learned something again: "Gumpen" is what they call it. Not a nice name, OK, but the refreshment at the turning point was still great --- the way there was very hot (we set off around 2 or 3 p.m.). The way back was much easier. The sun was already lower and it was mainly downhill. Highly recommend the tour! Really beautiful! Family loved it too :)
The tour leads steadily uphill, but not steeply up the valley of the Tavignano on very good paths. The river constantly accompanies the hike with its murmur. Arriving at the Pont de Rossolinu, you have the opportunity to refresh yourself in the pools. The way back is the same way, we liked the landscape even more on the way back. At the end, the citadel of Corte awaits again on its hill.
The hm don't seem to have been recorded correctly. It was 524 m.
Nice little hike. In 30-degree heat, please bring a drink. I'm experiencing it again: people ask for drinking water. Bring your own.
