Soest Market Square

Highlight • Historical Site

A beautiful market square that invites you to take a break with coffee and cake in a cozy atmosphere. Soest is very easy to reach by bike from both the Sauerland/Möhnesee and the eastern Ruhr area.

Highlight • Viewpoint

The city of Soest can be seen from afar. The drive up the mountain in the direction of Soest can be very fast if you don't use the brake: Warning!

Möhnesee near Körbecke

Highlight • Lake

At Möhnesee you can enjoy cycling on the paths around the reservoir. In summer, there are many bathing spots along the way where you can jump into the fresh water. The water quality at Möhnesee is very good everywhere, so you have the freedom to choose where you want to go swimming. The swimming areas are spread around the entire lake and you can choose between large sandy beaches, hidden coves or beach resorts.

The missing piece between A and B of this tour can be found in the second tour of the same name.

Very easy tour, only asphalt, but good to ride at 30°C, as there are a lot of downhill sections at the end. Once you've made your way through the city traffic and left the industrial areas behind, it becomes really quiet and tranquil. Not recommended for the weekend, though, as you ride along the Möhnesee and it can get very crowded.

April 25, 2026, Zum Möhnesee

Day two of our cycling weekend in Soest. We left the city on quiet paths, and after a few kilometers, the route began to climb noticeably. The high fog soon cleared, and on the subsequent descent, we had our first views of the Möhnesee. Of course, there was a detour to the impressive dam. Then the route led along the north bank of the lake with beautiful views of the water. By now, the sky was bright blue. Coffee break at the Pfeffermühle right on the lakeshore. Then we returned towards Soest via a former railway line. A wonderful section past huge rapeseed fields. Another short detour to Bad Sassendorf for the ice cream parlor and then back to Soest to the hotel. Great cycling day 😁

The TrioVelo route of the communities of Soest, Bad Sassendorf and Möhnesee is the basis of this tour. I added a detour to the Drüggelter Chapel, a spiritual place of power for centuries, located in the golden ratio of the imaginary connecting line between Cologne Cathedral and the Externsteine. Always very impressive for me.

TrioVelo" connects the city of Soest with the communities of Bad Sassendorf and Möhnesee over a distance of around 45 km. Cyclists can start from different starting points and ride the tour clockwise or counterclockwise. We started in Bad Sassendorf. From there the route leads south over the Haarstrang into the Möhne valley. On this picturesque section of the route, wide views open up to the mountain ranges of the Arnsberg Forest. The route leads for a few kilometers directly along the northern shore of the popular reservoir until it goes uphill again towards Soest. The entire historical city center of the bicycle-friendly old Hanseatic city of Soest can be "experienced" in the truest sense of the word. The tour leads past the historic market square, where you can take a break. Then it goes east back to Bad Sassendorf. Highly recommended bike tour.

From Soest, we cycled in absolutely gorgeous weather to the Haulle farm complex (Westphalian Salt Mines) and then on to the beautiful spa gardens in Bad Sassendorf. There, we took a short lunch break with a picnic. The route continued through the Soest Börde region, climbing moderately to Echtrop at an elevation of 280 meters, with magnificent views. We descended along the "Pengel-Anton-Trasse" (Pengel-Anton Route) to Lake Möhne. First, we cycled along the southern shore, over the bridge to Stockum, and then on to the lakeside park in Körbecke. There, we took a coffee break in the café. After the break, we cycled to Haus Delecke. From there, we climbed to Theiningsen, then continued for about eight kilometers almost entirely downhill, pedaling at 40 km/h, to Soest's old town. It's absolutely worth seeing. To mark the occasion, we finished with a glass of "Feige" (a German beer) and a serenade. 🙏 A beautiful day😉

Highlights: 1. Farewell Gerd Tour Möhnesee Hattingen 83 km https://www.komoot.de/tour/920383920?ref=aso 2. Guided tour of Soest - Westphalian Last Supper https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westf%C3%A4lisches_Abendmahl 3. Bad Sassendorf For about 500 years, a relatively small window in our church has been a special attraction for many visitors. An unknown artist has depicted the last supper of Jesus with his disciples in an original way. It is known as the "Westphalian Last Supper". Typical Westphalian dishes are on the table: a pig's head and ham, rye bread and beer. The schnapps, which is part and parcel of a hearty meal in Westphalia, should not be missing either. Such a folksy depiction appeals to the viewer.
