The hike from Forca di Presta to Monte Vettore is approximately 10.2 kilometers (6.3 miles) round trip and generally takes around 4 hours and 18 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the views at the summit.
This hike is considered difficult. It requires good physical condition due to a sustained ascent of over 900 meters (2,950 feet). While not technically challenging, the continuous uphill climb, especially in rocky and scree sections near the summit, makes it physically demanding.
The trail conveniently starts from Forca di Presta, where parking is available. This is a popular starting point, so arriving early is advisable, especially during peak season.
No, the trail to Monte Vettore is located within the "Class A" protected area of the Monti Sibillini National Park, where dogs are generally not permitted to protect the delicate ecosystem and wildlife. Please respect park regulations.
You'll encounter varied high-mountain terrain, including barren ground, grassy slopes, and rocky sections. The final push to the summit often involves scree. The path is generally well-marked and visible when free of snow. Be prepared for potentially very windy conditions at the top.
Along the route, you'll pass several notable points. These include the Zilioli Memorial Cross and the Tito Zilioli Hut (Rifugio Zilioli), which serves as a resting point. You'll also traverse Monte Vettoretto before reaching the summit of Monte Vettore.
The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views. You'll see the famous Piano Grande of Castelluccio, the broader Monti Sibillini mountain range, and on clear days, even the Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso mountains. Diverse wildflowers, such as Apennine gentian and potentilla, can be observed in the arid meadows, especially near the Zilioli refuge.
The best time to hike this trail is typically from late spring to early autumn (June to October) when the path is free of snow and wildflowers are in bloom. Winter hiking is possible but requires specialized equipment and experience due to snow and ice.
No specific permit or entrance fee is required for hiking this trail. However, as it's within the "Class A" protected area of the Monti Sibillini National Park, it's crucial to adhere to park regulations, which include no littering, no fires, and respecting wildlife.
There are generally no natural water points directly along this trail. It is essential to carry sufficient water for the entire duration of your hike, especially given the sustained ascent and exposure.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other established trails. You will find it intersects with parts of the Cresta del Redentore, ABT Tappa 15: Cerreto di Spoleto - Arquata del Tronto, and the Great Sibylline Ring Stage 7.
A fantastic summit tour with great views. Technically very easy, always on fairly wide gravel roads. But it is steady and uphill all the time and sometimes quite steep. Above the tree line, you have wonderful views of the Adriatic Sea throughout the tour. Further information and details about the national park: https://hikingthealps.com/monti-sibillini-nationalpark/
I recommend NOT to follow the track on the way back as I mistakenly found myself in a gully !!!
Classic excursion to climb to the highest peak of the Sibillini Mountains

June 1, 2024 fantastic day, sunny and windy. The CAI ALPAGO on the summit of Monte Vettore 2476
The start is quite steep and the path is stony. Then it branches off through the pastures. The last piece up to the Refuge is a bit challenging. There are no gray areas. From the Refuge you can proceed to the top of Mount Carrier or go down to the Pilato lakes. Due to drought they are reduced ... we must not go near the water to preserve the eggs of the prehistoric shrimps that live there. The descent to the lakes is difficult because it is all stony with some EE sections. We have not found any water sources.
