Spicy-scented forests, expansive pine heaths, rushing rapids and typical swampy landscapes - that's what Oulanka National Park is all about. The best way to explore its beauty on this varied, around seven-kilometer circular tour is to start counterclockwise. That leaves you with the impressive Kiutaköngäs until the very end.
From the parking lot, the path leads you into the light, dry pine forest, which always turns into swamps. Narrow wooden planks ensure that your feet stay dry. You pass an old reindeer enclosure and an idyllic lake. Then the path turns and offers you a wonderful view of the wide river valley. The Oulankajoki River has shaped the landscape around you for thousands of years.
A short distance away from the water, you soon hear the roar of the Kiutaköngäs rapids. A lower path brings you close to the dramatic masses of water that tumble through the gorge against a reddish rock face. The Oulankajoki is also your companion for the rest of the way back to the parking lot.
