Once a year, the picture-book landscape around Bad Goisern becomes a trendy meeting place for mountain and gravel bikers: More than 5,000 bikers from over 40 nations meet here every year to compete at the Salzkammergut Trophy and around the wonderful mountains to enjoy. On this training route you can also go on a gravel adventure between Hallstatt and Gosau during the bike season! Would you like to take part in the trophy? There is all information here: https://dachstein.salzkammergut.at/oesterreich-veranstaltung/detail/48220006/salzkammergut-mountainbike-trophy/.
This tour is physically demanding, but the landscape is a dream. Here you get the full load of Dachstein Salzkammergut. With the Hallstättersee, Hallstatt, the Waldbachstrub waterfalls, the Gosauer Almen and Gosausee together with the Dachstein, one highlight after the other. So there are plenty of opportunities to catch your breath, rest and enjoy.
In contrast to the event, you start in the middle of Bad Goisern and head straight for Lake Hallstatt. You follow the beautiful east bank cycle path with its spectacular suspension bridge over the deepest part of Lake Hallstatt before the first glimpses of the world heritage town of Hallstatt open up. In good weather, a stop at the lido is worthwhile in Obertraun before you pass the official starting point of the Gravel competition for the Salzkammergut Trophy.
Now it goes high: A long climb is waiting for you, which leads you up to the Rossalm. On the way you will pass the impressive Waldbachstrub waterfall and have the first wonderful views of the Dachstein massif. When you arrive at the alp, you can rest and replenish your energy reserves. Click here for the opening times: https://dachstein.salzkammergut.at/oesterreich/gastronomie/430000775/rossalm-gosau.html.
A wonderful, but quite demanding descent brings you down to Lake Gosau with its majestic Dachstein glacier - undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the Salzkammergut. Time for a break and for a souvenir photo. Past sheep, cows and horses you cycle along quiet paths and later along the main road back to the starting point of the tour.

Today we have a tour of superlatives - the training route for the Salzkammergut Trophy! Leaving Bad Goisern, we follow the eastern shore of the idyllic Lake Hallstatt. There is so much to see here that we can hardly move forward! Shortly before Hallstatt, we turn left into the Echerntal. We head over a steep, initially asphalted, mountain road towards the Strähnhag saddle. The higher we get, the more impressive the views become. Shortly before the saddle, the forest path turns into a demanding, rough gravel track, which we can only manage by pushing in places. You can reward yourself for your efforts on the Rossalm and Grubalm before heading off on an incredibly beautiful descent towards Lake Gosau. Completely unexpectedly, the mighty Dachstein glacier appears in front of us. The undisputed highlight of the day! The descent to Lake Hallstatt is another challenge thanks to the rough ground in places. However, the impressive nature leaves us amazed until the last meter of this route. A challenging gravel bike route that should not be missing from any ambitious MUST-RIDE list! 😃
Beautiful tour from the public car park at Lake Hallstatt (Gosauzwang). The first few meters along the road to or directly through Hallstatt. Then turn off into the Echerntal where the biggest climb of the tour begins. At first it is a mixture of partly asphalt and loose forest road. The further up you go, the steeper it gets. Along with MTB, it can also be done with a gravel bike, but decent tires (from 40mm) and mountain gear are recommended. Otherwise, "if you love your bike, push it". After a short descent, you come directly to the Rossalm, a very cozy place to stop for refreshments. After that, it is a few more meters of hilly terrain until you have the long descent to Lake Gosau ahead of you. When you get down to the lake, you should of course watch out for the tourists walking along the lake. This also applies to any cars pulling out of parking spaces on the way down from the lake towards Gosau. Continue to follow the track exactly. Until you reach your destination.
Yes, absolutely! Lots of forest roads and not much washed out.
